Steve Schoenhals Wins National TitleFor the second time in the history of the sport of wakeskating, a Pro Wakeskate National Champion was crowned at the Vans WWA Wakeboard Nationals, August 22, 2004 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Steve Schoenhals rode his way to the 2004 title. The win was Schoenhals second first place finish of the season and his first ever National Championship Title as a pro wakeskater. Schoenhals was followed by Brandon Thomas in second place and the 2003 Pro Wakeskate National Champion, Brian Grubb, finishing off the podium in the third place spot. Other riders finishing out the Pro Wakeskate division included Chase Gregory at 4th place, George Daniels at 5th place and Kyle Hyams in 6th.

Earlier during the Vans Triple Crown weekend, riders battled it out for a National title in the Open Wakeskate division. Open wakeskate was a new division for the 2004 Nationals tournament and Austin Hair was the first ever Open Wakeskate National Champion. Finishing off the Open Wakeskate podium was Matt Clifford in second place and Stef Tor in third.

In all nearly 300 riders competed on the weekend, making the 2004 Vans WWA Wakeboard National Championships one of the largest events in wakeboarding history.
