Mutiny Endurance Series Review by: Dave Barousse
Mutiny Wakeskates is back at it again and has recently sent Wakeskating.com the new Endurance Series wakeskate to try out. The Endurance Series is the latest skate designed by Erich Schmaltz of Mutiny Wakeskates and is the skate that everyone with big feet has been waiting for. When unpacking this skate from the box, I immediately noticed the bottom of the deck and how it resembles a snowboard. The bottom is very smooth and feels like it would hold up well when put to the test of vigorous riding and sliding. The 3 stage rocker stood out like a sore thumb and the nice die cut logo in the grip topped off a very nice looking board. After making a great first impression, I was anxious to get this puppy on the water and see if its performance was as good as its looks.
Size
Mutiny offers these skates with a three stage rocker in four sizes. The boards are available in 39.5, 40.5, 41.5, and 43 inch sizes. Wakeskating.com received a 43 inch three stage rocker model for this featured product article.
Shape
The Endurance Series has a shape that is common among wakeskates today. The one thing that stands out the most in the shape is the width. The decks are wider than normal making the ride a lot more comfortable for those of us that have big feet. The extra width also gives more room for error on tech tricks and wake to wake jumps. The Endurance Series currently has a flat top, but will soon be available with a concave top.
Construction
Mutiny went the extra mile when constructing the Endurance Series. The decks are made of a high density foam composite rail with hard rock maple veneer and a polyethylene base. After constructing the boards, they are base sanded and waxed. The wax helps protect the base and is similar to the method used on snowboards. An all temp rub in wax is used to give the rider a natural feel on the water and on rails. The rails of the boards can also be reshaped but reshaping them does in fact void the warranty. The Ride
After making such a good first impression, the Endurance Series skate proved that it was not all looks. The extra width and room on the top of the board makes for a very comfortable ride. The board handled well on technical tricks as well as wake to wake tricks and is very suitable for both. Ollies and shuvits felt snappy and crisp and liptricks were performed easily. The deck also responded very nicely off of the wake. I was anxious to see if I could feel a difference with the polyethylene bottom, but I didn’t even notice it. The board felt just as natural as wood skates and didn’t ride much higher out of the water like I expected it to.
I was also anxious to see how the polyethylene base would hold up on sliders, so I took the Endurance Series for a few hits on the sliders. I hit some sliders made out of various materials, including pvc and synthetic wood. The deck slid well on both of the materials and also responded well to the rigorous beating of the sliders.
I like the Endurance Series and would definitely suggest for you to take a look at it if you are in the market for a new wakeskate. The model that I received could have been a little heavier and I am pretty sure that Mutiny has already made that adjustment. The concave top will be a nice improvement to an already good board. The construction of the Endurance Series should make the life of the board reflect its name. Rock adhesive, foam composite, maple veneer top and polyethylene base should make for a good combination and a wakeskate that will last.
