Reef Byerly III Wakeskate Shoe Giveaway (CLOSED)

Date: 08-24-2008

Reef and the Boardstop have given Wakeskating.com six pairs of Byerly III wakeskate shoes to distribute as we please. Byerly is legendary and with the "legend" title comes some heavy history. Since I (the Keymaster) am a huge fan of wake history of all sorts, it's been decided that these shoes will be given away on a weekly basis, with each week having its own Byerly related wakeskate trivia. Oh, you'd like to hear the finer details of the contest? Come this way...

Two pairs of Byerly III shoes will be given away per week, for the next three weeks. In order to be entered into the Byerly III drawing pool, you must answer that week's unique trivia question correctly. At the end of each week, two winners will be chosen from all of the correct entries, and those winners will be able to choose whatever color of Byerly III they'd like. And while participants can only win one pair of shoes, they can potentially enter up to three times (once per weekly drawing).

Week one's question is a nice warm-up for things to come:

Week One: What year was Scott's first signature wakeskate released? (CLOSED)

The entry deadline for week one's trivia question is Sunday, August 31 at 11.59 p.m. central time. At that point, a new trivia question will be posted for the upcoming week.

**Now that week one's trivia is closed, it's time to announce the answer and the two winners. First off, Scott's first signature model wakeskate was released in 2002 as a part of Hyperlite's SBG series. It was the only year they produced wood concave wakeskates. Here is a heavily thrashed example:

The two winners who answered correctly and were selected from my amazing mesh trucker hat were Cody K. and Collin K. Both participants will be receiving a pair of Byerly III's in their colorway of choice.

Week Two: What surf company entered the wake market and produced Scott Byerly's signature traction pad for wakeskating? (To be fair, two answers will be accepted)

The entry deadline for week two's trivia question is Sunday, September 7 at 11.59 p.m. The final trivia question will be posted soon after that deadline closes. (CLOSED)

**Week two has been in the books for a couple of days, but I can say that we do have two winners. The riders who have either been around long enough to see these traction accessories in the mags, or have paid enough attention to absorb this wake trivia are: Bryan Roling and David Legler. Like the rest, they will be receiving a pair of Byerly IIIs in the size and color of their choice. Also, they will always be held in the highest regard in my mind for their wake trivia prowess.

The surf company that produced signature traction pads for Scott and a few other cross over riders, including Gator and Christian Fletcher, was Astrodeck. However, the "wake division" was called Bad Ass, since they also made wakeboards and bindings for a few years. There was also dual branding on the packaging, which is why both answers were considered acceptable. Here are a couple of examples of some signature Byerly traction from the late 90s.

This is some of the earliest packaging for the Bad Ass traction line. The psychedelic design always made these highly desirable in my mind.

From what I've been able to discern, this is a later design for the Bad Ass packaging.

Week Three: Scott was the first documented rider to land a particular wakeskate trick on a tractioned top flight 69 wakeboard, with the sequence published in the June 1995 issue of WakeBoarding Magazine (wbm). What was the trick Scott landed?

The entry deadline for the final week of trivia is Sunday, September 14 at 11.59 p.m. (CLOSED)

**We've reached our final week of drawings for the Reef Byerly III wakeskate shoe giveaway. It seemed as though the number of correct answers got lower as the weeks went on. But I also realized that my questions happened to work in reverse chronologial order, potentially making each subsequent question more difficult.

For week three, there were a number of ways to be resourceful, whether it be searching the forums or what have you. But you had to know what you were searching for, especially. if you were combing the internet for details. Otherwise, you could have peeked (at one point or another) at a June 1995 issue of WakeBoarding Magazine or their special 10th Anniversary Issue, which came out in 2003, to see that the captured sequence was none other than Scott Byerly performing the first known 360 shuvit on a wakeskate.

When Scott went out, did he say he was going to bindingless wakeboard? Who knows, but when Heather Lee wrote a small column detailing her experience with photographing this maneuver, the actual act of riding without bindings was never referred to with any degree of specificity. (As it goes, the term "wakeskate" wasn't coined until c. 1996.)

Our final winners for the Byerly trivia contest are Patrick Voosen and Bryan Bowden (who called his win in his subject line). Both will be receiving a pair of Byerly IIIs shortly.

Thank you to all those who participated in the Byerly Trivia contest over the past three weeks! Even if you didn't win, hopefully you've learned something new, and maybe even have a greater appreciation for our roots.

Send all entries to byerly_trivia@hotmail.com.
