Danny Hampson and Aaron Reed Announce Obscura Wakeskates

Date: 05-24-2008
Author: Wakeskating.com Staff

The precursor to today's still camera began in a primitive fashion that applied a basic of a law of optics, with the design unknowingly evolving into an instrument used to capture reality in a tangible form. Simplicity was the essence of the earliest camera obscuras, where an inverted image could viewed in a dark room on the opposite wall from which a pinhole originated and light emerged. From this basic concept, improvements were made over the course of hundreds of years, including the addition of a convex lens to improve image quality, and the use of a mirror to adjust where the image could be reflected. Eventually, the design of the camera obscura was ushered into the realm of portability and compactness. These smaller versions would aid artists in reproducing their surroundings and enhancing the quality of realism, while still allowing their own artistic vision to flourish. Later, the smaller camera obscuras were outfitted with light sensitive material, allowing images to be taken and the subsequent birth of an early photographic camera.

Similarly, there is a budding creation in wakeskating that's at an early stage of conception with room to evolve and flourish. Strength is present through a solid foundation that has been set through few visuals and many ideas, coupled with the motivation required to move them to the next stage. The creation: Obscura wakeskates. Conceptualized and incited by Danny Hampson and Aaron Reed, and with the support of their wakeskate sponsor, Liquid Force, Obscura will be a movement within the company to breathe some fresh air into wakeskating. Furthermore, it's directed at those who are truly focused on wakeskating and have a vision for which they'd like it to go.

It is not the intention of Obscura's founders to rush their product release, or any product development. Part of the motivation behind this design is to create an avenue for Danny and Aaron to be a part of something that will allow them to work closely with the mediums that portray their art. Obscura will become the reflection of the way in which they'd like to progress and direct wakeskating, so the appropriate amount of time and effort will be taken to do just that.

Currently, Obscura exists as a graphic concept. But as one might gather from the brand's moniker, the project will continue to build and evolve into a progressive, yet affordable wakeskate and accessory brand. Long-time friend and designer Brian Dawley will aid in the development of Obscura's products while under the close watch and input of Danny and Aaron. And while the two of them focus on their new project, Liquid Force will continue to produce boards that help expand and create avenues of accessibility for wakeskating.

While Obscura continues to take shape, it should be noted that filming is taking place daily with Aaron, Danny, and a rider who's respected for his style and personality, Kyle Hyams. In the mean time, the team has a blog at Obscura09.com where you can keep track of their progress or read about some random antics that you may or may not relate to, yet some how never miss the mark when it comes to good humor. So bookmark it, have some fun, and watch the evolution!
