The Bros Are Back In Town: WWA Nationals Wakeskating Returns To Wisconsin Date: 08-26-2006
Author: Wakeskating.com Staff
Much to my delight, the Air Nautique WWA Nationals event returned to lake Andrea at Prarie Springs Park in Pleasant Prarie, Wisconsin. Divisions were re-scheduled and shuffled, due to the weather conditions that would befall southern Wisconsin. Thunder and lightening would cancel most of Thursday (minus the hour or so of riding they were able to fit in), changing up all of Friday and pushing the Men's wakeskating event to Saturday.
However, patience is a virtue and the men's riders had a warm, sunny morning, glassy conditions and a huge wake, which made it perfect for the riders and the crowd alike.
Stand out happenings include Steven Campbell coming out of nowhere with total domination (minus the spirit fingers), Aaron Rathy flipping over the barrel (physically, not actually "kickflipping" over it or anything like that), Drew McGuckin pulling himself together after a dismal first pass and slamming down a linked up wake to wake bennihana, a toeside wake to wake frontside grabbed shuv, and a wake to wake melon body varial. And surprise particpant Aaron Reed made an appearance, much to the delight of all of Wisconsin, as did his alley oop re-entry backside 180, his signature boned out wake to wake indy, and what people said was the biggest wake to wake 360 of the day. And of course Brian Grubb showed everyone why he's known for his wake riding, with submitted evidence including huge 3s, wake to wake indys, frontside airs and a few other random maneuvers, all in rapid succession.
It's also important to give props to the amateur bros and the professional women that competed at the nationals. The men had some rough water to deal with on Friday morning, while it seemed like a couple of the ladies lucked out with some calmer conditions. Either way, congratulations to all participants alike.
Stay tuned for Sunday...it's about to get gnarly.
