2005 Nor-Cal Convergence

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to recreate an event like Asterisk? After watching the movie a few times it may have left you wishing you could have a body of water all to yourself. Wishing you could throw a rail anywhere and hit it at any time, day or night. Wishing you could make as much noise at any time without worrying about neighbors. Sounds like a bit of a dream, right? I'd say so.

Well the Nor-Cal Convergence was pretty close. Villa Lagos, a privately owned lake outside of Chico, CA, presented itself as the perfect location for a get together of Nor-Cal riders. Made possible by www.norcalwake.com and www.wakeupfilms.com, the event consisted of riding behind a Sea Doo wake edition, a Nautique, and Rewind winch.

The riding only seemed to stop when it was time to sleep. Friday was the usual "arrive and get settled in" night, and allowed each of the riders to get to know one another. Saturday, on the other hand, was all business. Or fun? Everyone gathered at around 9am, half sleepy, half wondering who was going to ride first. And that's how it all started.

Everyone rode behind a Sea Doo wake edition PWC on Saturday. It's what was available, and let's face it- it's wakeskating friendly. It pulled each rider up and down the small lake, which was sprinkled with rails and a kicker. Everyone rode to their little heart's content, then it was time to set the rail that would end up being the focus of attention that night.

So as the sun set below the horizon, the Sea Doo was exchanged for a Rewind Winch. This wonderful contraption pulled several of the riders through a short course consisting of objects to ollie or slide, with the main attraction being the aforementioned rail. Construction lights and an RV generator provided ample light to not only ride, but to take a few pictures and even some video. The riding may not have been top notch, but every rider was stoked! Stoked to the point where everyone kept riding deep into the night and eventually outlasting the batteries of one camera and the memory cards of another.

After Saturday, everyone was completely exhausted and wanted to sleep in a bit on Sunday. Until they saw the Nautique being dropped in the water, that is. It was quite fitting that a boat would pull us on our final day at the Villa Lagos. We'd had time on Saturday to work on rails, shuv-its and kick flips, and now we had the chance to mess around on the lip of a boat's wake. All of this with everyone watching and making fun of one another when they fell. It was all in good fun, though. Nobody was really competing with anyone else. With a bunch of riders that don't normally ride together it's inevitable that you'll find a few riders in every skill level, so everyone was just stoked to get to ride together. This event wasn't about advancement or progression; it was about having fun and getting to know each other.

A huge thanks goes out to all of the attendees. Without you guys this event would have been boring. Also to Scott Alexander for taking photos, and Wake Up Films for the video and for providing the Rewind Winch. And most importantly, big thanks to Eric at Villa Lagos for helping us make this event happen.
