Wakeskate Video Review: Issue Number One From Volume Wakeskate Videos

Author: Wakeskating.com Staff

Issue Number One is the first video magazine installment of three in the Volume series. This project was founded by Scott Byerly, and it's another "first" to add to his already impressive resume, as it's the first video magazine dedicated to wakeskating. After watching the first issue, it's pretty safe to say that it is 100 percent progressive, fun and entertaining wakeskating.

This film was edited by Papa Jay (of Money Can't Buy fame) and to the delight of many, it lacks the excessive artistic elements in its editing that many riders simply aren't in the mood for. With that said, the video really focuses on the quality of the riding, with the significant motion graphics used primarily for segues into other sections of the video. (ex. rider to rider, trick tips, a day in the life, etc.)

And as the concept might imply, the Volume video format really does function like a magazine. It has progressive riding with just about any rider you could want to watch, interviews with riders and industry heads alike (this issue contains interviews with Thomas Horrell and his Bi-level concept, and Joey Meddock), trick tips, and commercials (don't worry, there's riding in those, too).

I can honestly say that this video has a good feeling to it. It's hard to put into words, but it's almost like a lifestyle video. And it's really a treat to see so many riders in one film pushing wakeskating so far, which is probably the best part about this type of video format. The music is also out of the ordinary in that it's not mainstream, which adds to the entertainment and "feel good" factor of the film. I mean, it beats using a Battle Axe song for every section...

After watching this video numerous times (there's so much riding that it's hard to appreciate everything at once), some of my personal highlights would include:

-Aaron Reed's inside out, start up roller ollie. (Yes, sometimes it's the most basic moves that look the most poetic. Besides, it's my review.)
-Ryan Lemons' inside out frontside three shuv.
-George Daniels killing it on a hand made, Scott Byerly 40 inch wooden wakeskate. He also had a massive wake to wake kickflip to close out his section.
-Grubb's wake to wake frontside mute shove attempt, and a huge backside indy shuv off of the double up ( both were from the heelside, y'alls).
-A short tennis court wakeskate session with the Rewind Winch.
-Byerly's continuous progression on a wakeskate with his varial flips, noseslide variations, and wake to wake no grab shuvs.

Special recognition goes out to Drew McGuckin for filming (what I'd call) the best video part of his career. Whether it's riding wake to wake, snapping re-entries, or crusing in the flats, he's one of the most well-rounded riders with one of the best frontside flips I've ever seen, which just so happened to be over a floating picnic table. It was nice to see such an outstanding video part from an industry veteran who participates in an art that inevitably becomes youth-driven. Just let it be known that Drew has the opening section in this video for a reason!

Given the rate at which wakeskating is progressing and the talented riders that are making this a reality, I'm expecting Issue Number Two to be as good, if not better than the first. Unfortunately, number two isn't expected to be finished until November. For now, throw down some cash and check out Issue Number One from Volume Wakeskate Videos!
