Sattelyte Wakeskates:The Creators Behind the Boards.

Author: Jonesie
Date: 09-13-2005

I recently had the opportunity to ask the head honcho's of Sattelyte Wakeskates a few questions about the company. Sattelyte Wakeskates hails from the great white north a.k.a Canada, these guys have been around for a couple of seasons now and they are definitely establishing a name for themselves. Sattelyte is known to make a quality product, and their team's not too shabby either. The Sattelyte riders are consistently doing well in some of the U.S. and Canada's most elite contests. These guys are definitely a force to be reckoned with, both product wise and team wise. I'd for sure hate to be the competition. Enough blabbing, here's the 954 word Q&A

1)How, why, and when did the original idea for Sattelyte come about?

[EMILY]The original idea and first products came about because we, like a lot of people, aren't fortunate enough to own $80,000 wakeboard boats. This made it difficult to really progress with wakeboarding. After trying wakeskating we were both so hooked that it just made sense to pursue it further, and the fact that we could ride behind anything made it that much sweeter. With woodworking backgrounds and the help from a master woodworker, we made our wakeskate ideas a reality and Sattelyte was born.

2) The name, Sattelyte, where did that come from?

[EMILY]I really wish there was a fantastic story behind our name but in reality we were just playing around with a bunch of different options and after about a week and 4000 different names Garry jokingly said Sattelyte and it stuck.

3) Is there one main goal you would say your company strives to reach?

[EMILY]We have many goals and aspirations with Sattelyte. We strive to remain a true Canadian wakeskate and make great quality products, that anyone from a grom to a grown adult can learn on or perfect their skills. We also strive in building not only products but the sport of wakeskating itself. It's still such a small sport that it takes lots of educating, and working with other companies to form the beginning of a new era of riders.

4) What's the best thing about owning your own wakeskate company?

EMILY]The best thing is seeing people out on your product and ripping it up or just plain loving life and you know that all the blood, sweat, and tears you've poured into that product are being enjoyed to its fullest. It makes it all worth it, we just want people to have fun and if we can in any way provide that form of entertainment, we're stoked.

5)200+ riding days on one deck!? What's your secret?

[GAVIN] – That was 200+ days of riding on a 2004 Team Deck that Garry and Emily gave me. That deck still has its full rocker, and I still take it out from time-to-time. I basically just took that deck everywhere: in the snow, to the Kansas City Cable Park, to OWC, in the secret lab, you name it. It wasn't until Garry gave me a new 2005 Teeky that I stopped riding it. Flat decks are where it's at!!

6) The Secret Lab video was sick!, how did you come across that spot, and how often do you ride there?

[GAVIN] Get your hands on the Summer issue of SBC wakeboard magazine for more details on that spot and the story of how it was found. I drove past it yesterday when I was up in Canada and saw a rope dangling, so obviously people are riding it a lot still.

7) Any new designs/products in mind for the '06 line up?

[EMILY]We have tons of new designs and themes we're working on. Its all top secret for another month, but the unveiling will be worth the wait.

8) Who's all on the Sattelyte team?

[EMILY]We are steadily building a solid team that has spread out all over North America. Evan Reid, Tearing it up all season on the Ontario circuit. Mark Rennie, the wake to wake specialist, Brandon Livermore just killing it out of Lake Havasu Arizona, Cary K who we are proud to say is this years North Carolina State champ! We also have a development team that will be in full swing in the up and coming 06 season. The team was developed for groms, they are our future and we are focusing really hard on creating custom boards to suit there needs and help them rip it up like the big guys.even though Zack and Harry can out ride me any day of the week. Check out our site for the full team and bios.

9) Is there going to be a team video in the future?

[EMILY]There's tons of things we want to do and have planned for the future, doing a video and collaborating with production studios is defiantly in the works.

10) What event's have you guys been associated with in the past / are there any your name is attached to coming up in the future?

[EMILY]This year we sponsored Rock the Wake, all the X-Cup events which is the Ontario circuit and includes 3 stops and 2 demo days, Village Wake Up at Blue Mountain, and Crew Challenge. We also do lots of small events to promote in our area. The future holds many more events, and lots of fun top secret plans.

I'd finally just like to say thanks a lot for taking the time to answer my questions, you guys are kick ass. Now if you have any shout outs or thank yous, have at it

[EMILY] No prob Alex, thank you for your support we fully appreciate it. We would love to give a shout out to all of our Sattelyte supporters, helping a small company grow.
