More Than Just Smoke and Mirrors

Author: Gavin Jocius

When LucasFilm first released photos from the set of Star Wars, Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, I got stoked to see the movie. When the trailers started coming out, and I saw this guy with a double lightsaber (aka, the Sith Saber), I knew I was going to see the movie Opening Night. When it came time to see the movie, I made a point of not doing certain of my pre-movie rituals beforehand; that way I'd have a clearer understanding of the movie. When I left the theatre, I couldn't get over how much that movie sucked, from the effects to the characters, it was all just smoke and mirrors. Even today, regardless of what type of mood I'm in, I still think the film sucks.

Thank God, therefore, that our friends at Muskoka Militia don't rely simply on digital effects or lame CGI characters to carry a movie. Doing things the old fashioned way with talented people and cool locations is always a recipe for success. Don't get me wrong . . . there is a place for fire, explosions, and effects in a movie, but when you make it the main focus of your film, you're in trouble.

As Militia's Eric Snidal points out, "Militia III is the evolution of the Canadian wakeboard and wakeskate scene, featuring some of the province's best young talent as well as the veterans of the Militia Crew. There are huge wakeskate sections by Jesse Page and Brian McAulay as well as Chris Guard's return to action." Snidal continues stating that," this DVD follows the boys all over the continent and features some top riders from Florida, the Projects Crew, and transplanted Canadians Rusty Malinoski, Steve McKinley and Kevin Henshaw."

So while the initial production photos seem to show a reckless amount of fire and explosions, Militia III promises to offer the right combination of factors that makes a film great. Come spring, check Militia III out. It's not just smoke and mirrors!

Available this spring.
