2004 OWC Slider Spectacular - Stop #1

By: Chad Thompson

The first of three Slider Spectacular competitions at the Orlando Watersports Complex took place Saturday, July 31, 2004. Although it was the first stop, the riders put on a show of spectacular progression. Riders such as Zak Stone, Kyle Hyams, Chase Gregory and the only girl wakeskater of the day, Stef Tor, were doing front side 540's off of the camo ramp, halfcab 360's off of the new kicker and a solid kickflip onto the picnic table. The contest was broken up into two divisions, Intermediate and Open. The intermediate division consisted of 4 riders while the open division took on a total of 6 riders. The Open division had an extremely talented group of riders that threw huge tricks and showed why they were in top category. The intermediate riders were more of the up and coming group of kids that showed a desire to progress and let people see that the younger riders are getting better and better.

The Intermediate riders were so close in talent that the top spot could have been taken by any of them. The crowd saw Yuri Lima take the top honors with David Maus coming in a super close second. They both did halfcabs off of the kicker, but Lima jumped out in the front by landing a shuv on/shuv off on the picnic table. Joey Holden came in third with a shuvit on to the picnic table.

Kyle Hyams took in first place in the Open Division. Hyams did a huge ollie on to the picnic table into back lipslide and a super solid halfcab 360. Kyle also landed a shuv on/shuv off on to the picnic table which was a trick that a lot of riders went down on through out the day. Zak Stone brought out a nice display of aerials and a second place finish. Stone did a front side 540 and a superman off of the camo ramp. He also pulled a one-footed halfcab indy. Chase Gregory came in a strong third by throwing an impressive kickflip to 50/50 slide on to the picnic table and a super clean halfcab off of the kicker. Brian Gibbs threw a smooth benihana that he landed hard on and went down on.

Owc will host the second stop of the Slider Spectacular Series, August 7, 2004. The third stop's date has yet to be determined. Check out the photos and video from the event in the Wakeskating.com Media Gallery.
