Texas Ski Ranch Junior TriX

The Texas Ski Ranch Junior TriX event June 25-27, 2004 proved that even though juniors may be short on years of experience, they are high on the energy, triumph and skill necessary to endure a 3-day weekend of extreme sport competition. Of course, the titles as well as the $7500 cash purse was a nice incentive to keep them going!

The Junior TriX was designed to broaden the action sport competition by expanding the playing field to include athletes in cable wakeboarding, boat wakeboarding, skateboarding, motocross, rock climbing and wakeskating. Because Texas Ski Ranch is a "one stop" action sports facility catering to wake, skate, motocross and the lifestyle of the individuals who enjoy these sports, it was the perfect venue to host such an event for athletes and spectators alike. Sponsored by Texas Ski Ranch, MasterCraft, Burger King, Joe Harrison Motor Sports, CWB, Hyperlite, Liquid Force, Indmar, Jet Pilot, Tucker Rocky, and South Shore, each athlete was given the opportunity to choose three events in which to compete and expand the realm of competition to include the country’s top junior extreme athletes from a variety of backgrounds. For some, equal competency was found for their three events of choice; for others electing a second and even third event became more of a match of opportunity and desire rather than experience. The mix of athletes, chosen sports and perseverance became a winning combination for spectators. The blend of a multi-action sport 3-day event tested endurance, stamina and athleticism. At the end, the best athletes were not awarded for dominating one event, but rather for their consistency, determination and skill overall.

The competition opened Friday afternoon on the cable, giving wakeboarders and wakeskaters the opportunity to qualify for the semi-finals on Saturday. Saturday motocross athletes entered a time trial course on stock 50’s to move to the finals. Athletes placing in the finals were awarded overall points. Rock climbing became the "wild card" event for a majority of athletes who originally had only two strong areas of competition, and needed a third that would give them grace for not having practiced a great deal in advance. Of course, some, like Daniel Walden, came prepared for this heated event with lots of experience and gear to prove it! In the end, it was the climbing wall event that was one of the most enjoyed by the spectators, as Darren McKinley and Derek Conway battled fatigue and stamina for 3rd and 4th place, and an agile Austin Hair and an experienced Daniel Walden scrambled for 1st and 2nd place respectively.

On Sunday a highly competitive boat lake finals, skateboard competition and "just for fun - and the cash" double up competition wrapped up the day. As athletes worked the skate park, spectators who typically only have the opportunity to see these kids' skills on water raved about the chance to enjoy their multi-extreme sport talents off the water. The Junior TriX was a sweet opportunity to broaden the boundaries of action sport competitions by pushing what might be complacent juniors to pick up skills and fitness in sports outside their norm, as well as providing spectators with head-to-head competitions that inspire as well as entertain.
