Epik Wakeskate Shoe Review One of the problems with wakeskating is finding the right shoe for the job. Well, the first wakeskate-specific shoe made by Epik gets the job done.
If you've spent much time wakeskating then you know how annoying it can be to try and use regular shoes that get heavy and full of water. Or they don't have traction that sticks to the grip tape or foam well when wet. Epik, a company that also makes skateboarding shoes, noticed that there was a need for a wakeskating shoe and so they set out to design a shoe that made life easier and more comfortable for wakeskaters.
The Design
The Epik Wakeskate shoe looks from a distance like a normal skate shoe, but upon closer inspection you'll notice some subtle differences that make this shoe unique. It has built in drainage to allow water to escape the shoe, which helps keep the shoe light weight and keeps your foot from some sliding around in the show. It's made of closed cell foam and mesh that avoids absorption of water which keeps the shoe feeling very light weight in the water.
It also has gum rubber soles which are designed to grip well on wet grip tape and foam, but soft enough so that it won't scuff or mark up your boat. A great thought on their part.
Performance
We tested the shoes on both foam and grip-tape surfaced wakeskates, and found the shoes to grip the surfaces better than the normal skate shoes we used. The Epiks also felt noticeably lighter while riding, and they dried much quicker than normal shoes. They're definitely a step up from using normal shoes.
Style
The Epiks are also pretty cool looking shoes, which could be worn off the water as well. They look just like skate shoes, and look pretty cool while out on the water. They come in black or blue as pictured below.
Final Word
The Epiks are priced usually just under $80. This isn't very cheap, but you get a high-quality shoe that really does the job for wakeskating. If you're into wakeskating, these will work much better than some old beater shoes you had lying around. It's also good to support a company trying to push wakeskating by creating wakeskating-specific products and sponsoring pro wakeskaters.
