How do you make these? Do you just go out and buy wood then shape it yourself? Or do you have to apply the plys?

Lousy Hero, chop down a tree you can use an axe or chainsaw
make sure the tree is about 18inchs wide. You can easily make 3-4 wakeskates out of one tree
I usally look for redwoods or maple. Birch is good too.

Nice, im just about to finish my home made wake skate. Just have to seal it and grip it.
and not to steal the thread but if you already have the wood and just want to make a basic skate it will cost roughly 30 bucks for epoxy, urethane, varnish, paint..whatever you choose to use.
Here's a pretty good tut on how to make a solidly built board:
http://www.wakeskating.com/showarticle.php?a=586
I didnt end up using a jig and everything and still made a pretty decent board but it gives the basic premise.
