Building a winch, although alot cheaper than buying one. Is providing me with nothing but stress and a huge headache. We've encountered many many many problems along the way. We just got "finished" building it two days ago. Last night after work, and my Navy DEP meeting, Steven, and Myself got to assemble this bad boy. Only to find that the location of the motor has royally screwed up. The chain is either way too loose. But if we go to take out another link, it's too short. O yea baby. We're back to the drawing board, and have some serious welds to knock out!!! _________________ 10101 |

| Just slot the holes that your motor mounts to and then you can get your chain to the correct tension |

Classy, I had this same problem. When you mount your engine you shouldn't drill holes for the engine bolts to go through. You should make a slit in the steal so you can move the bolts back and forth allowing you to take out the slack out of the chain. _________________ ~ www.integrity-wake.com ~ www.iwinchglobal.com ~ |

Here is the problem with those options, although that are good ideas, and very cheap to execute. We measured it up, and welded bolts sticking up to put the motor on... We have to put the motor up on square tube to raise it off the frame so the TAV 2 wouldnt touch the frame... _________________ 10101 |

if your axle is mounted on a slant like this...
you can also slide up and down the pillow block bearings allowing you to have a link or so difference... thats how we tighten mine... the plate is just a hassle cause your always sliding the engine back to tighten the chain due to the engine sliding forward from vibrating _________________ PAVT since '05/'06 |

| building a winch is a lot of work, do it right, take you're time, I'm still working on things to fix and make my winch better all the time, don't rush it because you're gonna make more mistakes and more work for your self. try to think ahead to sometimes you can eliminate them before they bring you're project to a hault |

Also a great habit to get into is tack weld your whole frame together and mount everything. And if it all lines up good take it apart finish the welding, paint then ur done with no major headaches _________________

Soulprogression, well said.
Classy, Try to not weld as many things as possible. Especially anything involving the axle. I'm currently in the stage of fixing almost everything i've welded. I was like you, welding my spool to my axle, welding sprocket to the axle. In the long run it will give you headaches, because in the future you are going to want to update certain aspects of your winch.
Be patient and make it nice because it's your winch _________________ ~ www.integrity-wake.com ~ www.iwinchglobal.com ~ |

| chris barcellos' winch has a skate wheel mounted to the frame that takes out the slack in the chain. Might be your only option at this point, or at least the easies option. If you search integrity winch you might be able to find pictures. |

price.dan, The spool or the sprocket arent welded to the frame, however that not adjustable...
I figured welding most everything up would make one solid winch...which is true. But I get to the last step and bam, I'm insta-screwed. I just figured being about to take/add link I'd be fine with the chain. But this motor is simple in the wrong spot, but a quater inch or so _________________ 10101 |

you may be able to change the angle of the TAV2 therefore giving a different chain length
the TAV mounting plate has many holes for different mounting positions
might work ???
and worth a try before you get the grinder out on your welds |

EJazzle, No, the tensioner is no out of the question. However, the angle my chain is at I will seriously have to weld up some support for this thing, and my winch is already uber heavy, but if all else fails, I will use a tensioner.
hus #1, I am trying that tonight...possibly
I'm going to try the old dirtbike chain trick. I'm going to take a link out, to were it will to too tight, and try and stretch it on, by getting as much a possible on the sprocket, and slowly turning it, to feel link by link on... _________________ 10101 |

be careful with that... dirtbike chain's are very beefy... the last thing you want is busted chain lol _________________ PAVT since '05/'06 |
