I was doing landscaping the other day, digging holes in a marsh to plant marsh gras, and I was using an auger to do it. For those who dont know, its basically a drill type thing that bores into the ground and makes a hole. I was htinking that this could be easy to make a winch out of. The blade part comes off with a single screw, and one could attach something to spool up the rope, and you can get it for around 250 online:

I'm not really good with all the technical stuff, so i'm not sure what else you would need, but if there were a way to mount it sideways it seems like it could be easy.

The only problem with this idea is that the engine is a vertical shaft and if you were to tip it on its side the engine would not run.

if you built the frame so it supports it vertically, and got the rope to line up correctly, you maaay get it runnin. At least your thinking differently! my 2cents..

Why not have the spool under the engine sitting horizontal?
