Video production is an artform in itself and you'll never please everyone.

Wakeskating is an artform in itself. Why to people feel it necessary to try to make it something more than it is. I think i can speak for everyone that the first time any of us were watching a wakeboard video and all the sudden you saw horrel trying to kickflip a cut up waketech deck or grub doing a frontside three you just about shat yourself. Skating is art form lets let the ridding to the talking. And as for good music? That would be nice for a change.-mike

"It's not art when it's the norm."--I'm not sure how you can say what is and what isn't art, especially if you don't know the true intentions behind a wakeskate film or section. Lots of people wakeskate behind a boat on water. Does that make it any less artistic or self expressive? Each editor has their own goal with their vid, whether they just want to show riding, they want to be more creative and make people think, or they just want to include footage that will appeal to a wider audience (Yes, that is a common reason for using non-wakeskate footage). With that said, they all have their own editing style as well. Creative video editing will always be an art, no matter how many people take the non-traditional and thus far, less accepted route.

I personally welcome more creative editing and the use of non-traditional footage. Like with erich and his little integrity cameo in FITB, a lot of the non-wake footage seems to be an extension of himself and what interests and inspires him. It's kind of cool that he was able to personalize a little section that didn't contain any of HIS riding...it's like it represented integrity as a whole.

Anyway, Whether it be from the adef-ers or something from erich, I'd love to see some new stuff. So far, neither have disappointed me...well, except for 98% of the movie "hotdoggin"Smile

The only reason I bought FITB was to see Danny Hampson's ass crack on the side of that train. What did you guys buy it for?

Seriously though, get the f over the artsy effects. The guy with the cartoon face probably didn't want his own face all over a video. And besides, it's another wakeskating-only video out on the market, and we love wakeskate only videos because it gets our sport some sweet publicity.

You know pirate, you keep saying that you have more fun than anyone...that's like the guy with the small genitalia always having to say he's stacked... Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Wink (per someone's request--sarcastic undertone)

With that said, I'm sure all of the artsy-fartsies you listed (which is a funny list) would be really bummed after they saw your vid...

But mike, the integrity section was artsy? Why is it ok for erich to be artistic through his editing, but not other people? Just because it looks like an ad?

Plain and simple... i have been doing video for many years, and nothing so far has made me as happy as watching any old FLF flim... they are still the best, i wish Artie would would back to the wake world for one more good blowout.

One of these days i will get my decks finished and start working on a team video... and there is only one thing that needs to be in it... LIFESTYLE to me thats all that really matters.

I want to watch a video that is going to make me feel some emotion and put a smile on my face at the same time... and most of all make me want to go out the second im done watching it and go ride... To me a video needs to be a representation of everybody and remind all of us how fun wakeskating is and why we do it... FUN

And maybe the antics of say.... Motley Crue circa 1987 or so...

wakeskating is NOT an art.
if wakeskating in itself was an art, then wouldnt it merit more than just a point and shoot style of filming and drag and drop style of editing? why not shoot different angles of the rider then incorporate extra elements into the video in order to more effectively display this "art?" wakeskating is not an art if you have some schmuck shoot some riders then put this shaky footage into some editer and aimlessly arrange the clips to some mainstream rap song. sorry.

wakeskating is only as much of an art as the editer makes it. compare schmaltz to justin stephens. schmaltz is by far the most creative editor ever to grace the wake world whereas stephens consistently maintains beautiful aesthetic in his films. both are incredible filmmakers, but schmaltz makes art. what stephens makes sides more with the classical cinema side of wake vids.

the ONLY reason why you guys can get away with saying something like "i dont like artsy crap" is because there is so much progression right now that you can get away with just showing some young kid throwing down. in a few years when the sport ages a bit the riding will hit a plateau (in much the same way wakeboarding already has), and you will need this artsy style of editing just to keep your attention.

and as for the "cartoony" faced guy- he's just a talking head. you can clearly hear what he is saying, and you can see his lips move, so who cares what he looks like? personally i'd rather see something different than just some random guy talking into a mic.

also whoever noticed hampson's crack on the side of the train was watching the video waaaay to closely... Laughing

if you cant tell im actually a fan of the artsier style of editing. i see enough wakeboarding, skating, videos, comps, etc to become bored of seeing <insert rider here> throw yet another <insert trick here>. this is more prevailant with strappers, but in a few years skating will likely follow suit.

Nice post scott a, and it makes me feel good inside. I'll say my piece to end it here, but it's just slightly disconcerting to me that wakeskating is supposed to be an activity full of self-expressionists (that includes what we do on the water-sorry scott, I still think riding is an art if that's what the RIDER makes it) and these so called self-expressionists can't handle the creativity being expressed (with the use of riders) in a different medium. But whatever, that's my opinion and everybody can continue to completely dislike the artistic stuff.

Sleu, I will say that the aesthetic FLF had was pretty amazing...like how they were able to take a crystal clear shot, some sick move and some perfect music to make the view feel something special inside. They didn't use any of the special effects anyone uses now, outside of some slow-moing. They were someting special indeed. I'd put justin stephens in that category, but relentless is actually way too long for me to really appreciate it. I still haven't gotten through the whole film yet.
