Nick, I think it just boils down to personal influences. A lot of people can relate to a skate influenced style, whether it's because they actually skate when they're not wakeskating, or they like the aesthetic that comes along (pop, flick, catch it high, etc, etc--you know). And you know, a lot of the florida guys (and even jason messer was inspired and influenced by skating) that helped pioneer modern wakeskating were inspired by skateboarding.

And when it comes down to it, nobody is forcing anybody to do skate tricks. If you have a problem with that style, then don't kickflip, and don't shove. Maybe learn body overs to make russel gay and cory pikos proud Very Happy

I can't recall anyone (outside of cole) saying that so-and-so isn't a real wakeskater if they don't skateboard. But people catching crap for having a wack style isn't anything new...I think by saying the word "skiboarding" and "scott byerly/wake tech dudes", we'll all know what i"m talking aboot. Point blank, any type of sideways riding is going to help you, whether it be due to balance or "illin-steeze" and knowing how to grab, or just knowing "how to ride a board" in general. I can say with certainty that my switch skating this past summer helped my wakeskating out a ton, and I wouldn't have caught on to jibbing on a wakeboard so fast if I hadn't just spent that previous winter snowboarding every day. Or, you could even use vance as an example. he doesn't skate, and when he wanted to move onto kickflips, he said something like "I don't even know where to start."

And in my opinion, I think wakeskating has less to do with surfing than skating. Surfing was able to take a lot back from skating once skaters stopped pretending to "sidewalk surf" and basically develop a new style. Someone else said this too, but skating was able to give aerials and grabs (and whatever else) back to surfing. I would like to hear other people's reasons as to why wakeskating is a lot (or however much)like surfing because I may be missing something here. You know, I'm landlocked and I refuse to pretend like I'm surfing with one of those freaking wake-surf boards.

Tribal, I can make ammends with you (as far as the magazine is concerned)..but...you also gave us nickelback too. I don't know, it might be awhile before I can trust you again.,.. Very Happy

dany hampson in pre pop definately shows his surfing influence, and what are lip slides but a combination of a skate trick with a surf floater, surfing is the influence that leads to "hook" style; what I mean to say is that surfing will affect the overall way you ride, if you haven't really surfed, I highly recommend it once you do, you'll see how it influences all of your riding

Kento911 you pretty much summed it up .But I also feel Surfing influence is more about style and feel rather than moves.Being able to flow with the trannies and water, hold a mean edge and do it with style all come from a surf influence.Just like surf influenced skating is all about speed, flowing and power [I know I'm old school].

tribal, thats exactly what I meant by hook style, you can't describe the way byerly rides to somebody who hasen't seen him you know, and that is most deffinately a surf influenced style, I agree surfing has an overall effect on the way you ride
