alright everyone the time to hesitate has passed, and the time to make a decision has now come.

it seems to me that most wakeskaters would agree that they dont want to be known as the little brother of wakeboarding in fact most of you view this and want other people to view this as a totally different sport, right. and i agree w/ you 100%.

But it seems like everytime i see some one do something big or "gnarly" we say, "damn that was so skate style, that was sick" or one of my favorites is "lets do something urban like all skate style."

Now for those of you who dont realize what im getting at let me explain, your limiting yourself. do you really want to be imitating skateboarding? why cant we have our own style? Were not content being in the shadow of wakeboarding but we are content being in the shadow of skateboarding? i know that some of you are going to say well there kinda the same you know a board no straps nothing like that well if your going to say that then you can compare tubing to wakeskating cause your behind a boat. (sarcasm i know but try to see past that and into what im actually saying)

why is it that were not happy beging wakeskaters? how come we cant do a boned out ollie "wakeskate style" does anyone understand what im saying?

also the threads have been a little boring lately so i wanted to have a real topic to talk about

Nice pirate, I thought I inspired you to start a thread that was going to "blame canada". hahaha...pfew...

I actually said something like this aboot a year ago or so (in honor of my canadian theme). I'm not going to rehash it because for the most part, you and I have the same idea. As for my initial skate comment, I said it's skate style because it's a trick that could be linked directly to skating ie. an ill looking ollie (sorry, ill is my word of the week so I require myself to use it whenever possible). When I saw that, I thought back to a skate magazine cover from last spring that had a tweaked out japan, and I love how it looks when you can kind of tweak your feet for maximum bonage (NO SCOTT A, that's not a freudian slip). That mag came in my mailbox today (so I've burried the hatchet with canada...but I'll never forgive them for giving us bryan adams) and that picture is...ill. like I said, the way his foot is tilted...but anyway, that's where i"m coming from.

But there are still some things that are wakeskate specific ie. the lip trick maneuvers that the die-hard wake to wakers despise. You don't have an endless roller in front of you to either do lip trick combos or re-entry maneuvers or what have you. And yes, the tricks have skate names, but the two still feel so different that I wouldn't say a lipslide on a rail (while skateboarding) is the same as lipsliding the wake. You know?

And honestly, I think it would take a major league effort to find something that doesn't have some sort of skateboard influence (like the ol' hang ten manuever--yes, it started with surfing, but then skaters ripped off, so you know, it's still not original). Even danny hampson's body varial revert has derivation from skating (a month or two ago there was a sequence of kris M. on a mini ramp doing a fakie ollie body varial revert that looked strikingly similar to danny's trick--and even kris' trick had already been done in the early 90's (according to him..I found something similar in H'street's lick, though I dont' know that was the video he was referring to)).

but in conclusion, I love the skate influence and I don't mind admitting it. Some can't relate, some can, and some dont' want to. In the end it's all about personal inspirations anyway, so ride how you want to. Unless it involves strapping a handle to your board...

i say skate style for lack of better words but if u think about it...a kickflip done like on a skateboard looks hella better! i think aaron reeds ollies on the bilev on the cover of wbm are changing into our own wakeskate style but in all reallity its alot like skating and skate style looks good. i get wat ur saying and dont take me wrong its a good thought but i have no problem with calling it a skate style.

to play devil advocate...

wakeskating is still in its infancy, trying to find its place in the boardsport world. Maybe wakeskating looks up to skateboarding...like an older brother of sorts. Maybe one day, when wakeskating is able to formulate its own opinion...because it is more experienced and developed as an individual...it will be able to branch off completely on its own and disassociate from big brother all together.

But until then...it is "easier" for ppl to compare wakeskating to other sports. Gestalt Psychology - human beings have and easier time comprehending things as a whole rather than in their seperate parts. Wakeskate is still young...and it is not really large enough to be considered anything more than just a part of boardsports.

PIRATE...i'm not saying i disagree, infact i think what you are saying is right on the nose. The question here is why?

headhuntermx4, True dat.PIRATE, I feel it but all extreme sports look to there brother sports for guidance whether it be names of grabs or how to make your style look good. Even look how surfing (the grandfather of all of our board sports) has evolved borrowing from skating and snowboarding (i.e varials and inverted airials) and even from wakeboarding (straps). Bottom line, We all share in the goodness that are extreme sports. All the different ways we ride is what makes style style whether its skaty or not.

first of all, it doesn't make sense to wakeskate "wakeskate style". in skateboarding you don't skate "skateboard style", it's just skateboarding. and that's how wakeskating is for me.

you all can quibble with the words all you want.
i just see it as being associated with wakeboarding because it's a watersport, and it's associated with skateboarding in that it is like skateboarding, and it and it's evolution are somewhat inspired by skateboarding.

but it's different, and it's wakeskating. who cares if it's something's "little brother"- i think it's silly to be insecure about how cool or different wakeskating is.
i hate to be cliche but.. just do it.

Wakeskating really has alot to do with skateboarding... it is the father of wakeskating, well one of the fathers, but skateboarding has inspired it in so many ways i mean look at the new sick tricks people are pulling off, hardflips, heelflips, front and backside flips, i mena thats all pulled right from skateboarding. so i really think its ok to say "skate style" also, no1 really says "hey that was skateboard style" they just say skate, and u cant have to word wakeskate with out having skate in it so, i dont belive there is anything wrong wiht saying "skate style" cuz it truly is. and satori*, is right its stupid to worry about some1 saying wakeskating is the little brother... HAHA, all u gotta do is jump on your skate and show the so called "big brothers" up... then what, skate to have fun dont worry about what peopl call it or whatever HAVE FUN! Very Happy

Good post Pirate.I see it as it's own sport somewhere between surfing and skateboarding. As with any other board sport it can use other sport's for trick ideas but it will always move in it's own direction because of the different medium.
And E-snow I checked my local 7-11 today and they're still displaying the old WBM so give us Canadian's a break Laughing

Good Erich Schmaltz quote... I personally think it shouldn't be so much about trying to exactly emulate skateboarding as some (electricsnow) seem to want it to. I agree that most of the tricks come from skateboarding, but that doesn't mean we have to do everything by the book the way that skateboarding does. I love watching a rider that has skateboard style because they skateboard a lot and it makes their riding enjoyable to watch; it's when people make it so that if you don't have skateboard style, or don't skateboard (e-snow, I'm not referring to myself right there Wink ), you're not a true wakeskater. That bothers me.

I think what we have here is a very young sport trying to find it's own identity, and in doing so we are going to test out emulation of other sports, I don't want wakeskating to be anything but wakeskating, but lets be realistic, it is a cross between skateboarding and wakeboarding, and that was the spirit in which it was created, not to metion that all board sports draw from each other for influence, the truth is skate style is modified surfsyle, whcih nobody has a problem with being influenced by b/c it's the grand daddy of all bordsports, I think that wakeskating really needs skate influence, but we also need wake influence, and surf influence, if you really want to talk about where I want to be with wakeskating, I want people to watch a wakeskatevid 2 or 3 years from now and go : wow look at so and so's frontside flip nice skate style, and then see a guy do a wake to wake melan three and be like ooooh so clean and slow with a real snow/wake style to it, and then see the relaxed way that T Ho or Byerly rides and see the surf influence, but still know that we do what we do, not to be like others, but b/c this was the best way we could have fun and express ourselves
