So I've got a question. The new Alliance came into the shop today and it's the 2014 gear guide issue. I understand it's Alliance and they cater to more than wakeskating and if I want wakeskating only I should keep my nose in a wakeskate specific mag Blah blah blah.

So of course I turn to the wakeskate guide just curious to see who is in there.

Byerly
Catalyst (hyperlite)
Home (Dieter Humpsch)
Jobe (wtf they are still around?)
Obscura
Remote
Ronix

My questions is simple, does the mag contact these companies for information to be used on the issue or do the companies contact the mag and submit everything? If it's the latter why are the smaller companies not trying to spread the word on their skates?

I would rather see WaterMonsters instead of Jobe. I mean Dieter (no disrespect at all, I'm looking forward to what he has going on) got his one off shapes in there yet WaterMonsters is nowhere to be seen?

Steven M, Have you tried asking Alliance how they do it? I can't see any reason they wouldn't explain it to you...

Gnarly Dancer 42, I picked it up from some Australian surfers I stayed with at the O'Neill house back in 2008. I don't know if I was the one who introduced it into the modern wakeskating lexicon, but it was a pretty memorable day for me & the boys when it became part of the stereotypical 941 vocabulary (along with "true" & "fire", for their various uses)...

2013 was sick.

nick I did and I'm waiting on a reply. Just interested to hear what the deciding factor are for the brands that are featured.

I am really stoked on wakeskating. I've been riding for 10 years and every time I ride I love it even more. And right now is a very exciting time in wakeskating. The wakeskate tour is really fun to follow and the riding is amazing, great full length videos are back, and there are a bunch of smaller wakeskate companies that are making really good decks and are doing a lot for the sport. Trying new boards has always gotten me stoked, and right now there is so much good stuff out there. I finally got to try some Virtue skates, and I absolutely fell in love. Great concave, super fast rocker (even faster than remotes), and still a good snap to it. Only downside is the base was sticky on rails and rips easily. The skates themselves looks really strong. Why arent more companies putting strong bases on boards like Remote? All of the main skate brands are over $300 already anyways.

This resurgence of rider owned companies reminds me of 2005-2008, but hopefully these companies last. Is wakeskating finally big enough to support all these small rider owned companies? I hope so.

wakemitch, maybe being smaller operations, they don't have the machinery to make a board like that? Just a thought. Remotes weren't made like this until they parterned with moonshine, and of course they have more resources.

Or maybe they just don't like.

The home board looks like dieter's personal deck, so the sticker thing doesn'tsurprise me. I like that look...the stickers make the boaed personally identifiable. As a board hound, thst's why it's kind of cool to get someone's old rider...

It would be interesting to know all the numbers behind wakeskating. Sponsor money, amount of participants etc.

Wakeskating needs another big shoe company to get involved.

Wakeskating as a sport needs to be less intimidating and more inviting to new riders. This was why lip tricks were so appealing, tricks that anyone could learn and were actually considered cool. Lip tricks, cool or not, are a great foundational tool for riders to use to learn board control, rail tricks, etc. and most importantly add a new book of learnable tricks for riders who are starting with limited resources. Lip tricks are something that is unique to wakeskating and must make a comeback within the next year. They are fun! Birthday

Seems like nearly all the people i talk to about wakeskating now or try to teach have no idea about the progression of tricks or what lip tricks even are. I think this is wierd considering that most of todays top level pros were all lip trick nerds at one point or another and now stay away from them.

I took a few sets last summer to retry all of them and it is a blast. They died out before they reached their full potential.

Remember there was a time where boards were made to adhere to lip tricks, they are a big part of what makes wakeskating what it is and in any old videos they are still awesome.

It just pisses me off that kids see insane waterfall winching and just give up, feeling like they have no place in this sport. Its up to us to show them (kids/ people watching) levels 0-10 not just 10 all the time.

I love lip tricks and definitely do them.

But I do not see a place in pro videos for them anymore. When you have 2-3 minutes for a part, you want to fill it with the best that you have. All those lip tricks are being done on rails so they should show that instead (which they do). You don't expect skateboarders to put curb grinds in their parts to relate more to new skateboarders.

Lip tricks will always be done at a recreational level. I will definitely do them forever.

wakemitch, They very much do. Especially during skateboardings most formative years. Nowadays the smaller tricks they do are primarily done in lines. And yet in some form or another, we end up seeing every type of small trick from one pro rider or another.

jake .R., fortunately, it's not up to you what tricks riders put in their parts. It's up to them, and that's what makes video parts so amazing. It's that riders personal interpretation of wakeskating, good or bad.

Now, if a rider comes a long and has some "fun" vibes to their part by doing a few lip tricks, it might be fun to watch.

I agree with how fun liptricks are and I will continue to do them all the time. But that being said, I just dont think the pros need to be doing them in the videos. The hard thing with lip tricks is there not as consistent as hitting a rail. When you do a shuv to front board on the lip its a lot easier to land and lock in compared to a rail where you need to be locked on pretty well perfectly to make it work. I think learning rail tricks on the lip can be useful but I dont think they are anywhere near as respectable as doing the same thing on a rail. And when all the pros can do the tricks on rails whats the point of doing them on the lip.

I still love seeing a solid 270 shuv to front board on the lip, looks so nice when done right.

I don't care what the tricks are if the edit shows the riders true soul.

I'd rather see a sweet lip line with a smile than a sick trick with a Mad face.

Its ultimately up to the filmer/ directing/ and the rider to be OCD enough to Andrew Rynolds thats same trick untill it looks good and they had a decent time doing it.

Nothing better than loosing the sound of the winch to some stoaked "Yeeews and OOOOOO's"
