All joking aside,
A thought popped into my head from another thread where I jokingly commented on Jeremy Kovak and his wakeboarding. A comment Jeremy made way back when was posted, "why do I need to grab if the board is attached?" Though it seems ridiculous, he actually has a good point.

Why has grabbing the board become "style" and the better way to do tricks? Is that applicable to wakeskating? Or even skateboarding for that matter? I know the obvious and quick answer is yes, but if you really think about it, it should almost be considered less stylish and more lame.

First, I think it adds style because you can position yourself in ways that look ascetically pleasing, especially when rotating. It can add difficulty in tricks like kickflip indy or flinger flips. It also becomes a necessity for certain tricks or easy of tricks when you are not connected like in surfing, skateboarding, and wakeskating.

But my latter point above discredits the coolness factor of grabbing, at least to a degree. Catching the board with your feet, manipulating the board with your feet, is definitely the goal of most tricks in the non connected boardsports, which almost contradicted the "style" of grabbing. Keeping the board with you on a 360 in either skate or surf is considered much harder. The same could be said about a w2w shuv vs shuv indy. I can see why on a wakeskate there is added difficulty grabbing a 360 because of the handle pass, but hopefully you get the point.

Also, there are not many tricks done in wakeboarding/snowboarding that look "cool" without grabbing the board. Maybe that superman??? But how cool and respectable is Thomas' shifty or Aaron's poke. Those are the definition of style, but no grab is necessary. Further, surfing has really gone a different direction with grabs. A non grabbed spin is given much more respect and notoriety than grabbed, especially that two hand grab crap. But even further, Volcoms kickflip contest cleared states that a kickflip indy would not be considered "legit" for the contest. I think this is debatable because kickflip indying a surfboard seems to be much harder than not grabbing. But the idea that grabbing makes it easier is the idea that I am really trying to think about.

W2W indy feels cool, and if I could, I'm sure that tuckkneed stuff feels really cool. But has the "grabbing is cool" really stuck with wakeskating? Why hasn't someone slapped Grubb for doing shuv indys down gaps?

I'm excited to hear your opinions! Please excuse typing errors, overuse of quotations, and bad grammar, its late!

SEAMAN, your post was long.. and im busy but i thought of this when i was reading.. MFM does "no grabs" in snowboarding and it looks amazing, in an interview he said the same thing, "my boards attached, whats the point of grabbing"

SLWK, SEAMAN, Foreplay.

You dont always have to ride it hard. In fact some times thats not right to do. Sometimes you have to do some grabs, maybe even a shifty too. Sometimes you have to squeeze (the board), sometimes you have to bend your knees, sometimes you have to say hey, Im going to tweek you softly, Im going to poke you gently, Im going to land you sweetly, Im going to flick you discreetly. ........
But then im going to stomp you hard.

thats fckin team work!

SEAMAN, what I see is that today it's pretty much about how much you can do with your time in the air. Say you have 3-4 seconds of air time. How much movement can you fit in that 3-4 seconds. A grab just adds to the length of your trick which is making good use of your air time. I definitely think there are a lot of awesome tricks without grabs. One of my favorite tricks of all time is just a huge boned out ollie. So sick. But yeah it does seem that the grab on a w2w shuv indy is more to get good board placement and to set yourself up for the landing the same as a w2w body varial.

Grabs are all about steezzzzz. Adds difficulty and can look super cool. I'm a bigger fan of some slow rotated and grabbed spins rather people hucking themselves and spining as fast as they can.
example: Yes the 1080 is sick in wakesboarding but a big tweeked grabbed 3 is so much cooler looked and stylish to me.

Everyones got an opinion.
