Knocked out is really the only time you need a vest............. This will never take the place of a vest............ Be smart kids.

the big wave surfers use um not to get held under for multiply waves....it wouldnt really be thesable to skate in that, great idea though Smash

A pressure activated switch would be smarter incase they get knocked out. Maybe with adjustable depth settings to be tailored to the waves depth. I'm sure that will ne the next step. Awesome idea though

mojo, im assuming you mean gauge the switch to the atmospheric pressure of water at a certain depth?

i disagree on a few key components from which that idea would fail.

1 many big waves keep you shallowly bellow the surface and pushing toward shore, where you will most likely get torn to shreds by rock.

2 the depth to gauge a switch wouldn't be able to be triggered till about 10 to 14ftt which in many spots has coral reef that will kill you before that depth.

3 big waves disrupt underwater pressure in comparison to stagnant water and the pressurization at its different depths

i believe you're thought process is in the right direction but the idea is flawed.
it seems like something you would have as a fail switch a last resort if you're in zone where all the requirements of the environment are met, but i certainly would not replace the pull chord. I would have both or adopt an entire new triggering method.

Replacement triggering method:

i would keep the pull chord for the surfer's use, possibly adopt a pressure switch, but i would also attach a remote sensor, that would be linked to a remote that an accompanied person has on hand who is at the big wave with the person who can initiate the flotation bubble from above water if the surfer is capsized for a descent amount of time, so even if the surfer is knocked out they can still be recovered at the surface.

Until it has a 5" LED touch screen and 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 apps, it's malarky.

Ya I was thinking along the lines of parachutes that open at a certain distance from the ground in case of black out

I wouldn't say that being knocked out is the only time you'd need one. However, I agree with the rest of your post. Hey look, we're friends now!
