Basically the standard air reverse "intentionally" digging the nose of your board into the water. The only person who seems to really say they do it on purpose is Brother Andino, where everyone else doesn't really know what the hell surfline is talking about. I can't do air reverses but with the 10,000 that i've seen, the nose digs into the water on 75% of them just based on the pure physics of a wave, buoyancy of a surf board, and speed that you are traveling. Josh Kerr was the first person i have ever seen intentionally do this at J-Bay two years ago where he did basically an inverted reverse nose picky thing that was the coolest thing to happen to surfing since sliced tomatoes. Regardless, cool little clip with all of the air reverse to "nose picks". What is so great and infuriating about surfing is what should be the simplest looking move ie just a nice bottom turn into a frontside air takes years or even a lifetime for some to master and too look good, it may never happen. An air reverse is a pretty common CT move now pretty much done at any air section or the closeout of a wave but really is the equivalent to sticking a kickflip for us or maybe even beyond a kickflip.

People watch the pipe or chopes contest with these guys dropping in and making standup barrels look effortless where I can say that i will never in my life time get a standup REAL pipe barrel or Teahupoo barrel. The energy the wave is putting on you trying to suck you over the falls and destroy your body on its reef for trying to ride it gives the wave almost a lifelike quality where it is a battle of man vs beast with beast often times taking the win. About 5 years ago, my buddy and his parents spent a week staying on the north shore for vacation and their house was right on pipe. He had never surfed before and pipe was about 2-3' hawaiian that day. The house had a rack of boards so he decided to paddle out because it didn't look that scary to him, and it was a glassy day with an easy paddle. He made it out and within 1 minute, the guys told him that he can die if he tries to go on a wave out here and they made him paddle in. I just thought it was hysterical that his first time trying to surf, he paddled out to pipeline (which at 2-3 feet isn't really pipe but can still work the hell out of you, 4-6 foot pipe is the most dangerous time to surf it reef depth wise, easiest way to get trapped in one of the caves and drown).

Do you guys think if we towed into a big wave, without having to deal with the vertical drop and popping to our feet at the same time, that we just with our wakeskate/board background could make a wave like Teahupoo? Not huge chopes but say 6 foot chopes, or do you think the speed and power/pull of the wave send us right over the falls when we let go of the rope? Is anyone on here a good enough surfer that has real experience with waves like these? One of my dreams is to go for the whole waiting period of the Billabong Pro Teahupoo and watch the contest from the channel, and then going to surf a nice 3 foot beach break on laydays Laughing.
I feel like if one of them asked me if i wanted to try and tow in I would do it though even if i knew i was going to get worked just to get a glimpse of what that barrel looks like from the inside.

kyle, If you look it up there's a video of that girl who got her arm bit off by a shark towing in at Jaws. This proves 1 of 2 points.......... This little one armed 16yr old girl rips.. (which she does) Or Tow in's are cake. Am I a good surfer ? NO....... Do i love surfing............... Yes. Here's what I believe, Can i get a wave at pipe if I weren't a haole and I was allowed to surf there ? Sure...... But I promise you I would be sitting wayyyyyy outside and on the shoulder furthest from the peak.

About towing in: I tink alot of towing in (minus waves like shipsterns) is probably mildley easy if you have board controll like most descent wakeskaters. Seems like it would kick ass to get barrelled off your a$$ but at the same time, I want a solid barrel that I paddled for and earned..... One that everyone see's (i'm sure thats true for everyone). I kinda feel like towing in is probably alot like jumping out of an airplane..... Once you bail out (let go of the rope) your already in for the ride..... You've already grown a sack and hucked it....... Now your exit plan just has to work.

I think the WCT is so bad ass. Dusty Payne can KILL it at trestels, but I promise you he isn't going to be sitting as deep as Kelly, Andy, Mick, Parko, Damo, CJ, Bobby ect....

I dont even know what you were asking.... I'm just super stoked on surfing right now.... and J-Bay is in 13 days. Crazy Eyes Very Happy

can we make a tow-in wakeskate thread? that would be so gnarly to get whipped into a wave on a wakeskate and get barreled. i know parks attempted it strapped but never really got barreled. nick, are you paying attention? get your tow-in on and get shacked on a skate Idea

I hope Nick would never tow at Chope's on a wakeskate........ SOOO Gay IMHO. Let surfing do what it does best............. SURF. Wakeskating and wakeboarding are weazing (pauly shore) off enough boardsports already................ Surfing is King and we should respect that.

kyle, Josh Kerr did them and they were kinda cool mostly just because they were a creative variation of an existing move, using previously unapplied phyics, and Josh Kerr is awesome.

All I can say is that negotiating a reef break like Pipe or Chopes on a substantial day will be NOTHING like your normal day pumping the sandbar at home. The level of power, precision, and awareness needed is, in my opinion, greater than trying to tre flip a gap while dodging interstate traffic... the dynamics of these waves are just so incomprehensibly complex and powerful... 4-6 ft is not the most dangerous Pipe, I don't know where you heard that.

stompin9s, Instead of a tow-in wakeskate thread how about a tow-in wakeskate trip? Birthday

PIRATE, I don't think you could get a substantial wave at Pipe - Tow-ins are definitely way way easier than paddling in, but it's not gonna read the wave for you - Wakeskate board control is almost irrelevant - Getting a stand up barrel towing-in can be just as satisfying as one paddled into, especially if you use the benefit of being up earlier to position yourself for a better ride - It's all about dignity, the difference between letting go at the peak and setting yourself up as the wave begins to break or whipping at it fullspeed and seeing where that takes you - "Sitting deep" at Trestles isn't really impressive as it's a performance wave, not a dredging slab - The guys on the WCT are some of the most dedicated and talented folks in the world - While I'm not sure how towing in at Teahupo'o on a wakeskate equates to homosexual behavior, I'm not sure how you can say to let it be after suggesting we make wakeskates out of Paulownia... Barney Laughing

TALKING ABOUT SURFING IS SOOOOOOO CLICHÉ

nick, first off............ Scrub it Kook. Also I accidently erased the part of my post where i said he wont be sitting as deep as those guys when they get to Teahpoo....... (my Bad Embarassed ) Using the words sitting deep and trestles shouldn't be in the same sentence. WCT dudes KILL it.... The coolest part about the wct is that they surf in waves like trestles and Teahpoo. It really is the Best of the Best. I love your analogy about the traffic 3 flip................ And for the record, I will see you in the next life on the WCT, and i will be kicking your ass.

You get my point about waves at pipe your just being difficult.

Again i disagree with you about the gratifying part of getting barreled by a tow-in. I know that I will never get covered up in any wave of consequence like the above mentioned. BUT if I got two (one tow and one paddle) i think i'de be alot more proud of the paddled wave. For now i'll have to live with the only little sprinkler cover up i got during this past AMAZING WINTER.

Also associating Gay with Homosexuality............................. Soooo small minded of you. Cool

Barney Out..................

Surf’s Up in Fiji with new decree
Thursday, July 01, 2010

Surfing areas around the country are now open to anyone who wants to use them under the new Regulation of Surfing Areas Decree.

Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum says this will allow access to any surfing area in Fiji without payment or compensation, and enhance Fiji’s image as a premier surf travel destination.

In the past some top surfing areas were restricted by hotels or resorts that had leases over the area and imposed payment and conditions for their use.

The Decree cancels any existing instrument of title, including any lease or license - without payment of any compensation.

All interests for any surfing area in Fiji have been vested to the Director of Lands and the decree excludes any challenges in court against the cancellation of existing interests.

As the Minister responsible, Sayed-Khaiyum will determine a date for the commencement of the Decree.

PIRATE, I changed my mind in the shower about the tow-in barrel being as satisfying as scratching for it, there's no way an internal combustion engine can feel better than desperately digging your hands into the pulse of the earth and dropping into becoming a blood cell in a roaring crystal blue temporary artery of the world...

but you're still a kook Laughing Smash
