from what i have gathered the issue people are talking about most is losing reception holding the phone b/c the antenna is built into the case is a software problem not hardware. when the bars go away they are really still getting the same reception. anyone got firsthand knowledge if this is true

Well, apparently it's a big enough issue that Apple's decided to hire some additional 'antenna engineers' to help get things straightened out.
