i tore my MCL 2 weeks after i moved to Florida, shizzle sucked, but after 2 months of my own physical therapy routine it felt good as new. I couldn't walk for the first 2 weeks too, but without insurance or extra money to get it checked out i didn't have many other options. Looking back, if i had the money to have surgery i would have still done the same thing. Surgery isn't always the best, it can sometimes cause more problems because of the added scar tissue, but if your ACL is completely tore then they don't give you much of an option.

skimboarder, I tore just my mcl, a month later I was wearing a brace and hitting rails. I was in some serious pain, but I was still riding. I wasnt going anything crazy, but just MCL isnt really that bad...

Yeh the MCL isn't as bad as the ACL. But there will probably be different recovery times depending on how severely its torn. Hopefully your ACL is ok then you probably won't need surgery.
I tore my MCL 3 years ago, exactly same situation (start up - splits). I tore the MCL pretty badly and there was minor tears in the ACL. I was off it for 2 months and did physical therapy the 3rd month I believe. I took the recovery kinda slow because because I was afraid to rush it since I was starting my first college soccer season at the time.
3 years later it still gives me problems from time to time, as lame as it sounds listen to your doctor and give it enough time heal to heal completely.

I'm with bromfutter on not hoping right into surgery, think big man, not just short term!

I never gave you guys an update. But after my MRI i ended up having a Grade 2 almost a complete tear grade 3 sprain. And a partial ACL and PCL tear and severe bone bruising. My doctor didn't recomend surgery with the injury I had unless it really starts to interfere with daily life or I have any problems with it. I got braced up with a lennox hill brace, I don't know much about them but it's comfortable and seems to do the job. I bought an excercise bike since alot of you guys recomended riding one, and I've been riding it 20 minutes a time, twice a day. Definitely helped me with getting back to walking.
My doctor put me into physical therapy last Friday and got me setup on some home excercises. I start the actual physical therapy tomorrow. I'll be going three times a week for a month. After physical therapy is done my doctor cleared me to wakeskate again july 7th! He told me to wear my brace for support when I ride.
I've never been so stoked/anxious to get back on the wakeskate. Hopefully I haven't lost too much, but the muscle in my left leg i just gone, I have nothing left! How did you guys approach your first day back out on the skate after a knee injury? I want to go out there and be riding like I was but I know that's not going to be possible, but it's going to feel great to be back on the board.
I'm taking a trip to mccormicks a few days after I'm cleared to ride to celebrate, can't wait!

geissap, you just have to know your limits and respect the board you're riding. It's not a wakeboard so you can't ride it like a wakeboard, and by that I mean you can't huck your tricks. it comes down to board control and that takes time to learn.

geissap, haha man your chances of this happening are extremely low. I wakeskaed daily, and i mean daily, for four years before I ever got hurt and it just happened to be it was a bad injury. I've done the splits before and not got hurt, it just happened to be on a startup so i was alot higher and that's what did it.
Don't let this bother you brother, don't even think about it. You could tear a ligament just jumping around on land. Get out there and have a good time, wakeskating has provided me with so much enjoyment over the years that I wouldn't trade it for anything.
edit//and I agree 1000% with esnow. The reason I got hurt is board control. I went out there and lost control of a trick, I threw it a little harder than usual and it ended up still coming up to my foot, but I was only able to catch it with one. Just keep board control, and do not ride above your limits as a rider as far as what you're trying. wakeskating is relatively safe, I've got a lot less hurt in it than I have skateboarding, except this one injury.

it totally sucks. a few years ago scott byerly destroyed his knee by doing the splits on an inside out 3 shuv. but there are dudes who do the splits brutally and make it out OK. I don't know how many of you have seen snap (an instructional, not a crash video or anything ), but thomas horrell does a wake to wake 3 and after he lands his back foot comes off...totally insane. but he never tore anything during his career, or never needed surgery. he only knocked out his teeth, and that was on a wakeboard.

Broke my ankle in late February, and got back out on the water roughly a month later. A couple weeks after I got back out there I tore my mcl. That put me out another month or so. As far as getting back with all you had before.. Don't say it's not possible. The more you think that the more improbable it will be. Between the ankle and my knee I landed my first kickflip and after my knee happened I'm riding more consistently than ever and learning a lot faster. Just aim high. Expect to be better than you were before, and allow it of yourself.

| spowell, the doctor said to wait three months before riding, but i think i will be out there sooner. It sucks watching everyone else skate and all i can do is drive the boat. I fractured my fibia above the ankle, and the cast is staring to smell like ass.

Skimboarder, first off I am really sorry that this happened to you. It sucks ass, I should know I tore my ACL, MCL and meniscus and got a bone bruise from a wakeskating accident, here is the video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpI0DvwYqoc it's been 5 weeks since my accident and three weeks since my surgery (my ACL was replaced with a cadaver ACL). My MCL was so bad they had to cut my knee open and sow it together (MCL's can heal on their own, ACL don't). My MCL was not repairable on its own. Sadly, I am still on crutches because of how damaged my MCL was.
Here is a video of me loopy before the surgery, (there is also footage of the actual surgery, the inside of my knee.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFjuaekhQFY
Do whatever it takes to not get depressed, the meds. they give you jack up your mind and sleep schedule.
DO THE REHAB, it sucks ass but it's essential to getting back on your board.
PM if you have any questions, I am going through it still. Get well soon.
