Took me the better part of a week to do with all the layout and waiting for urethane and paint to dry, but it turned out pretty good. I should have paid more attention to the spacing between the transformers, as I spaced them wrong, but oh well. It's about time to start grinding them off again. She's still a rider.
I still need to grip the top of the Cassette. I'd like to use one solid piece. Anyone know where I an get Jessup grip in about a 16"x43" piece?

--X--, how did you apply the graphic? You said you did some work in illustrator...did you make a transfer of some sort?
Also, www.boardstop.com has full sheets of grip for sale. If you need a template to follow if you want your grip cut like the old cassette concaves, let me know.
kornhouse, they take up room space in my old bedroom at my parent's house...there isn't room for anything else in there, that's for sure. The closet is packed with all of my wakeboards and a few wakeskates also.

I first printed out the image you sent me and drew a grid over it so I could approximate the background image. Went to Lowes, had them color match the background image colors, got two testers of paint for those two colors, and then I taped the board off and painted it in a few steps.
After that, I opened the images in Illustrator. In Illustrator there is a tool called Live Trace. It basically will trace a bitmap image and turn it into a vector drawing so you can separate the backgrond and transformer images. You adjust the trace options so it looks good enough and have Illustrator do the heavy work. Once it's traced into vector format, I scaled the entire image of the board and robots full size (43"x15"). Then I took the vector images of the robots and their backgrounds at full size and printed them on thicker paper. I cut those out so I could trace the shading around the background of the robots. Then traced the shaded area onto the board and hand painted those on with the same color as the background.
So for the transformer images, since I knew I was applying a few more coats of urethane over the board, I was able to print out just the transformers onto paper (yes I said paper). I placed them over the shading, then urethaned the board, plopped them into position, then put three more coats of urethane over them. Bam, done.
I thought about printing out die cuts of the white parts of the robots, then other die cuts of the black parts of the robots and overlaying them to complete their look on the board, but then that's a lot of unnecessary work weeding the stickers and I'd have to go to my friends work to print the die cuts... blah blah.. so I decided since the urethane is really tough, it would work with just the paper and a few coats. I also thought of hand painting the tranformers with paint pens (my original idea), so I bought the paint pens, and then realized it would take me a month to paint those. They're pretty intricate. Chris Mack did an awesome job designing those.
I marine urethane all my wood decks and they tend to hold up really well. Like you can see this deck is an '03 and it's been ridden every year since '03, and I hit rails with it too. It gets scratched up, thus this is my third time refinishing the board. The images of the transformers will probably get trashed (eventually), and then the board will get refinished. I already have my next original concept in mind.
My method for this isn't perfect, but I've seen OEM boards with worse finishes and mine tend to stand up for a long time. I'm no pro graphic artist, just some old guy having fun with refinishing my old deck. Sorry bout the long explanation.

--X--, no apologizes necessary. It was interesting to hear how you made those graphics happen. And chris did do a great job on those. Thanks for sharing your process and the final product!!
I don't know if you ever saw this, but here's a link to a chris mack interview I did. It has a few stories about some cassette graphics, including the transformer series: http://www.wakeskating.com/showarticle.php?a=784

KirbyJosh, I would say 2004 because in july 2004 thomas posted a pic of one of the first 05 concaves on here, but it already had graphics (and some 4trac fin holes).
