Posted: Apr 26, 2010 1:29 pm Post subject: I rode a Remote |
|
|
Yesterday, I was able to try out a Remote 39.5".
I have been really anxious to try a Remote since hearing Ben, Andrew, and Silas were starting their own wakeskate company. I had faith that they would create a great skate because of the input they would give as well as the passion they have. And when I saw Aquafrolics I knew i had to try one. The concave just looked so delicious
The one characteristic that everyone has heard about these boards is the rocker line. We all read about it in the interviews about how they wanted to make a wood wakeskate that was fast and didnt drag. WOW . When I got up on the board the first thing I noticed as I cut outside the wakes was how fast this board was. I have been riding a 2010 TNT 38.65" and that thing is fast compared to everything I had ridden prior, but this Remote was lightning quick. I felt like I needed to slow the boat down, but I soon got used to it. The ride was already different from every wood deck I have ever ridden.
As I carved around and popped some ollies and 180s I got to know the concave a bit. The concave was very familiar to me. It just felt natural. To me the concave felt very similar to the concave on the 2010 Integrity decks. Because the concave is pressed into the deck rather than milled out it is smooth natural curves and not big triangles. The concave is pronounced and you really feel it, but not uncomfortable like the LF Mod or Byerly Legacy. The concave really cups to your feet making you feel connected to the board. The deck just wanted to stay right with you the whole time.
This deck is hefty and quite thick, about as thick as an SST. The rail shape is actual the same shape as an SST bottom and top deck together(it was right next to one in the board racks). But on the water you did not feel the weight. A few weeks prior I had tried the Obscura 40.5" which was about equal weight and thickness and I definitely felt the weight when ollieing and spinning the board. But on the Remote I didnt notice the heaviness to the deck. I think it had to do with the magical rocker of the deck. I did notice the weight of the board when spining shuvs, but again I'm coming from an Integrity deck, but I was able to adjust just fine.
One aspect of the deck I was not keen on was the snap. When I went to ollie the board was not as snappy as I was used to. I felt I had to work a little harder to get similar pop to what I was used to. I really noticed it on front bigs, which I had to really makes sure i got the nose plenty high when throwing it (Chris O noticed the same). By the end of the set I felt like I had been riding this board for a multiple sets and felt right at home. I even landed my first ever backside bigspin on the deck! I also felt right at home with wake to wake riding on this deck. It edged so well and didnt seem to take much effort. Chris O was very stoked on the wake to wake characterists of the deck.
Overall I was so impressed by the Remote deck. The 39.5" size felt really good and didn't feel too big coming from a 38.65". If you are wanting a wood deck I would get a Remote. |

| disco hippo, i rode an 08 hampson 40" for a while. i never felt totally comfortable on the impulse. the asymmetrical shape was weird and the concave was too mellow for me. you will notice how much faster the integrity reacts with you and how fast it snaps up on ollies. |

wakemitch, keepin it real mate... nice
disco hippo, I went from ridding an 08 Control 43 (which is the same as the 08 Impulse, but with EVA) to a 39.39" Excelsior. The first time I rode it, to be honest, I was disappointed and didn't like it. It felt really small and kinda weird. It took me a couple of days solid riding before I got my feet placement sorted because of the size difference. Once I got that down I fell in love with it.
Now, after ridding 5 different boards over the summer season here in OZ, each one of them felt slow and clumsy compared to my Integrity. |

Am I reading this right?
Are you saying its a wood SST. I mean that would make a lot of sense because Silas spent tons of time perfecting that skate the up and leave. _________________ Obscura Wakeskates! |
