I would get some better rope to start with. Ski rope is far too strechy and will give you an uneven pull. Your spool dimensions seem okay. I would also put some holes for 7" and 6" diameter inner's if you can.
look for the amsteel everyone uses on here.
http://www.samsonrope.com/index.cfm?rope=192 see if you can find a source of this stuff in NZ.

| 7" would be a good place to start, if your going to fast make the inner smaller, too slow, make the inner bigger. Its a trail and error thing when you get your winch working to iron out all the kinks and talyor the pull to your winch setup.

I'm using 1/8 amsteel on an 8'' ID configuration and the spool is only 12''. So that's 4'' of space for the rope.
That being said, you don't need a big spool at all when using it.

with the amsteel or bulletline i use a 6" spool width (8" or 7" diameter.) Any bigger and the fairlead won't let it pile up near the spool walls and the piles of rope will "fold" over, causing annoying tangles when you are trying to walk the rope out.
As it is, i still get occasional tangles with the amsteel.
