every day. by everyone.
When was skateboarding invented? And by whom? When something begins as a crossover from or between different other things. It's hard to say when it began.
Wakeskating is being invented right now.
to become more familiar with the roots, though, go through some of this site's old articles and interviews. _________________ - Evan Molina |

We used to stand up on knee boards. Your question should ask, who made the first wakeskate? _________________ In just two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday. |

I stood up on a knee board and edged out the wake in 82, Yellow Hydroslide. Wish I still had it.
EJazzle, ya, but how many skateboards have foam on them.... I think the Question should be when did we start calling it wakeskating.... _________________ OTT, West West Yo

this isnt skateboarding.
in about 97-98ish me and my buddy cut down his wakeboard and put grip tape on it. is that a wakeskate? we also put wax on another cut down wakeboard with no bindings. is that a wakeskate?
if i ripped the grip of my woodworks, and put either wax or a certain yellow foam material would it be a wakeskate?
i think zack is right, when did it officially become wakeskating. _________________

EJazzle, My first wakeskate I made out of an old flight 69 with foam snowboard stomp pads. But I got the idea after I saw Mayday. I didn't start wearing shoes until after 97-98. I can't remember when Mayday came out. Maybe 92-94. This Question could be like the Tootsie Pop question. "How many licks does it take to get to the tootsie roll center of a tootsie pop?" LOL
Do you still have those old boards? I wish I still had mine. _________________ OTT, West West Yo

You're probably kidding, but I totally disagree because jason messer knew what he was doing and he rode barefoot with traction. But when he rode, wakeskating didn't have a name. Also, mayday didn't come out until 1998 or so.
Also, I have an article about one version of the origins of the term wakeskate. I need to get approval from the person I've quoted, but I'll try to get it up soon because I've been sitting on it... _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

electricsnow, Ya I was being funny in my mind..... I was a die hard barefoot wakeskater on foam... you caught me
In 97 I use get coached (wakeboarding) by this guy Wade Grant and he was towing Jason around then. I don't think he had a boat even. But he would talk about how he would fall all the time and he just didn't understand why anyone would do that. LOL Maybe now he knows why someone would. Fresh Water Traction was started by Jason too. He surely was one the first people to wakeskate. He had so much drive and ideas to ride and try something new and all he had was a board and an Idea. I remember seeing a pic of him in WBM long ago him hitting a crazy barrel rail and I think 50-50 it.
Hope you get your approval. _________________ OTT, West West Yo

I would never say it was byerly because there were a few wakeboarders (and jason, because he wasn't a wakeboarder) that were converting wakeboards to wakeskates or wakeskate-like boards. And in my mind it's probably like wakeboarding; I'm sure there were random people all over the place riding surfboards (or what have you) bindingless behind boats and thinking nothing of it. But there are very few people who ever really commit to promoting something when it doesn't exist.
Anyway, I have an amazing article from an old action now magazine that has some surfers riding behind boats. It's from 1982 and it's the closest thing I've seen to our "wakeskating" because they're popping re-entry ollies and hand shaping smaller boards. but that doesn't make the boat surfing from the60s and earlier any less valid. Watch the parks documentary and see what some of the people at cypres gardens were doing...it's bad ass. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |
