Professor Ellen van Wolde, a respected Old Testament scholar and author, claims the first sentence of Genesis "in the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth" is not a true translation of the Hebrew.
She claims she has carried out fresh textual analysis that suggests the writers of the great book never intended to suggest that God created the world -- and in fact the Earth was already there when he created humans and animals.

this is by far one of the most interesting things i have heard in a long time. it's too bad that "christians" will not accept this to be true. i'm watching the history of ardi, the 4.4 million year old hominid who was a bipedal, but still had grasping feet. it's very intriguing. _________________ "I said take me to the sea, cause that is where I want to be. pretty interesting. I can buy into that, for sure. Christians as a whole have deffinetly mis-interprited the bible. The Metaphor is thick, and the Bible is a very complicated book. I actually like the idea of "God seperated himself from the world". That speaks very true to the Genisis story. God removes himself, creates something new........ and this is what we do with it. Which then leads us to the true first book of the Bible...... Exodus. Exodus ? No and Yes.... No because obviously when you open it Genisis is there first. Yes, because Exodus is is the start of the story in which God is reconciling all of humanity back to where it should be. This is why in Genisis everything is "east". Cain went, East, he built a new city.... East..... When God ask where have you been, he says i am East of Eden.... i am off the track of where i'm supposed to be.... Thats the story of the Bible, Humanity is traveling east.... East of where they should be.... East of Peace, East of Love, East of Tollerance, and Respect.
This is why it is crucial for "christians" to study the Bible with 1st Century Eyes. _________________

i don't consider myself very religious but it sounds better when you think, "God created a bunch of humans and animals on a planet that could sustain them" rather than "God created millions of different planets and stars that no one can live on for no reason and then Earth for people and animals."
PIRATE, i like when you write about this stuff. i went to catholic school and kind of just learned to take the bible as straight facts and found genesis very odd. but since then i've learned your supposed to take genesis as a metaphor and i like how you interpret it. _________________

| I do believe that some of the words in the bible could have been mistranslated. I'll respect the belief that God decided to make animals and people, but for my own beliefs I'm very skeptical on this. I do believe that God is omiscient and all powerful and that he did create the universe. I kind of think the idea that God couldn't create the world is belittling God, but to each their own I guess. |
