This is totally the wrong place to ask for help but maybe someone here has some advice for me.

I have a small koi pond in my backyard with about a dozen fish... a couple of them are really unique colors and friendly fish and I would be really sad if they were eaten by this stupid white heron bird that hangs out at the pond sometimes.

MURDERDEATHKILL

My most favoritist koi was already eaten recently and the bird left a giant white splatter-turd on my patio as it's calling card when I got home from work that day. Sad day for me for sure.

I'm not trying to hurt that bird (I think it's protected?) but I'm looking for any way I can keep it the hell away from my koi while I'm at work? ideas?

Nothing fvcks with a lion. Laughing

You could get chicken wire framed to the shape of your pond and lay it on top every day you go to work, it'd be a hassle but it should work.

My mom had the same problem. The people that she got the fish from gave her a net. it sits on top of the water, you can see through it pretty well so it's not too bad. You just have to leave it on there until the bird stops coming.

The heron at my mom's ate all of her fish the first time around. She had something like 14.

Check this stuff out. It looks kinda gross but i'd just put it out to keep the birds away. They'll stop coming eventually.

Wow thanks for the suggestions everyone!

I'm thinking about going with the net idea. As much as I don't want to look at a net, this morning before I left for work I checked on the pond and one of my (least favorite colored) koi jumped out last night and committed suicide. My garbage can should smell pretty ripe and awful by the time I get home tonight.

Thanks again Very Happy

If your fish are committing suicide, maybe the bird is not the problem here. Just saying... Laughing Laughing

taku, I think that -=AlexXx=-, has the right idea..I see those plastic owls on all the docks around here to keep the gulls and pelicans away...Not sure about herons/egrets/cranes though? I dont think it will help with the suicidal fish like the net will

What we do to keep herons out (besides blasting it to bird hell) is to hook it a motion sensor and a pressure switch from a sprinkler to a waterline that runs off the circ pump for the waterfall. The bird will set off the sensor and turn on the water and it sprays water into the pond like a gigantic pissing statue and freaks the bird out.It works better than the owl,the stupid heron would fly in and land right on the owl.

hahaha Very Happy thanks!

The fish that made sweet suicide love to my patio is ripe in the garbage right now. First fish to do that... I guess with all the recent rain the pond water level was really high... level with the rim of the pond.. my fault :/
