If I remember correctly, the La Sewer Winch had/has a spool that spins independent of the axle. I think the sprocket is connected directly to the spool.

I am thinking about using this idea on my new winch,
Does anyone have any positive or negative input on this?

I don't understand the purpose of it, unless the spool is able to be disconnected from the sprocket.

yes releasing spools are the shizzle... there are a couple of ways to accomplish this but as long as it is done right its awesome

its hard to go from a winch with a releasing spool back to a regular winch

I think i finally have a good solution for a freewheel spool that does not rely on a pin through the axle... It does cost $300.00, but you can attach a forward reverse gearbox to the TAV2 (actually you probably need to use a TAV 40 so you have enough room in front of the engine to put it on) and anytime you want to freewheel just switch it to neutral. take a look at http://www.mfgsupply.com/m/c/218390A.html?id=5n4hggH4 for mounting diagram.

we have a quick release spool but its been more hasle than its worth in my oppinion but then where we ride most of the time its easy walking, the only time its really been handy is in deep water when you gotta swimm.

Release Spools are nice but if u winch in salt or are lazy with winch upkeep it can rust the pin in or salt it up makin it a pain to release and definetly not fun having to realign the spool to insert the pin the more u pull the more ur TAV belt will wear in. Just walk it out

everytime i've walked out or driven a release winch the spool has not had a problem taking the pin out or putting it back in whether it's winching at the beach in jax or winching grubbs house on o-town. release spools are the best way to go if you have a driver that doesnt like to pull rope.

I saw a releasing spool winch that used a highly modified pair of vice grips... it was awesome, and you could tell that it was built so strong that it wouldn't break. It did look like a lot of work to engineer it though.

I didnt get any photos of it Sad

A spool is tricky but also easy.
If you would like one, I can make one for you.
