|
|
Hey friends,
We built this winch, and it works great but it just wont deep water start us.
On dry land it'll pull a land board at over 20mph, but its just too damn slow to get planning on the water - we just get dragged through it.
It's a honda 8hp, with Tav2. 10tooth at the Tav, and 54t at the sprocket - on a 8.5" drum, see a video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&v=wT461Wfh2Bg
Seems pretty mean on the dry land? We rode it on a canal and it got us up ok:

trouble is, if you look close you can see the bolts making the drum are bent. So I thought about changing the gearing, hoping that it would put less strain on the drum. We got a 60t sprocket instead, but it was too slow.
So we made the drum smaller - only 7" and went back to 54t, but it just drags us thru the water, and bent the bolts a bit more!
Any ideas?
Everything seems real close to working, but I'm out of ideas - what would you try next?
Thanks for any suggestions dudes. _________________ I love riding boards like a fat kid loves cake.

Last season I was running a 8hp 10/60 w/ TAV2 and an 8.5" spool and I was having the same problem so I went down to 10/54 and still had the same problem so then I went with 8/60 and it made all the difference in the world. Now I am using the 10/60 and a 6" spool and it's perfect _________________ Go Balls Deep Or Go Home |

Thanks Montgomery, sounds like just the same problem as me.
I can refit the 10/60 easy enough, and making the spool smaller feels like the right thing to do, but taking an inch and a half off the diameter has slowed it down quite a bit already, another inch less, to 6" will make it a bit slower, right?
The Tav never seems to be able to change ratios because the engine cant spin fast enough - it always stays in low which keeps the spool rpm too low? _________________ I love riding boards like a fat kid loves cake.

6inch spool center.
And bolts in the center are not as good as a solid pipe.
Ive got a bunch of spools if you want to buy one. It fits a 1inch axle. I sell them for 30 bucks each. Give me your zip and ill figure shipping. |

Just might be a fix that worked for me tiwce... u have a 8.5 inch spool which increases the torque on the pull a little just narrow ur width that thing is really wide i did the same with my 6.5 engine and took out the rods and narrowed the spool to like 8 inches wide and its worked good _________________ Dont Do it |

P.S. Make a rope guide!!!
nothing worse the the rope wrapping around the spool axle or sprocket _________________ Dont Do it |

Thanks LBC
that video is a bit old now, we just narrowed the spool to only 7" but it just seems to have slowed it down a bit too much, is a smaller drum the right way to go? The trouble with the bigger drum was that the handle was just getting snatched out of your hands before you could get going. _________________ I love riding boards like a fat kid loves cake.

smaller the spool more torque, but less consistent pull. _________________ "I said take me to the sea, cause that is where I want to be. I said take me to the sea and let my mother bury me." Buck-0-Nine |

@ MOJO - Cheers, I guess more torque is good for deep starting....
... when you say less consistent pull, do you just mean slower?
If we get up and planning quicker, then full throttle should be found sooner anyway, right? _________________ I love riding boards like a fat kid loves cake.
