im thinking about trying to build a cheap winch and obviously you have to start out by getting a motor

is this a good one?

No, thats a vertical shaft motor. You need a horizontal shaft, which of course is much more expensive.

yeah i agree with mxguy14, check out pressure washers, edgers, and snowblowers. Ha ha ha, but I don't think you will find any snowblowers in south fla.

thats right on the edge. Probably too small, i would use at minimum a 6.5 hp, especially if its a knock-off.
If your not going to be deep water starting, then it may work.

That motor actually looks like a good find DIRK, i am jealous. I would rock that 6.0 b&s over the knock off, especially for the price.
