So I am debating building or buying a winch. Here is my dilemma I am going to be doing some winch events here and I don't want to look unprofessional with my homemade winch. Should I just break down and buy one, or are no reservations for riders to ride behind a homemade winch?

I would say buy if you have the extra bit for it. I pick up a pulldozer b/c for the price it has allot of bad ass features.

If you have mechanical talents build it. Otherwise stick to buying one.

In the case that we had pro's show up for an event, would pro's have any reservations riding behind a built winch vs a pulldozer?

I am about to put my winch up on here for sale pretty soon once I have time to take some pictures. Looking to sell it for 1200. Its a grinch frame, briggs and stratton 6.5, torque converter on it, 500ft bullet line, and a straight line carbon handle.

It all depends on how soon you want to ride/how mechanically inclined you are. I'm decent at building things but have no experience with motors or anything. Luckily I have a couple friends who can help me out. I started my winch and have been working on it off and on since November. IT is a heck of a lot cheaper to build yourself though..

building a winch is fun! i have built 2 in the last 14 months.

as far as other people's opinions, any pull is a good pull reguardless of who built it.

building takes a longer but is less expensive.

That was my biggest reservation, about building one, looks like i am going to go for it, and just build it. My cheaper, especially since I have a free motor, so that helps, I am going to buy a spool. What kind of brake setup do these winches have? I am an avid mountain biker, so I have a lot of extra parts around I could slap a brake on there real easy, if that is beefy enough

I don't use a brake on my current winch but my #2 has a brake on it just mainly because I have a brake setup laying around
