Maybe something with this and some sort of programmed chip to limit the # of rpms or something...

Has anyone thought of just using a speedo for a pushbike? Just wask the little sensor on the spool and away you go. Set it up like you would on a bike and you have your speed, distance traveled and so on. Just an idea ive had for a while.

U would prob need a sensor that picked up how much rope u pull out, then program what speed u want your engine to run at, and then at what distance to shut the engine off and or engage a brake. Be a bit of effort, but would be pretty sweet, i was thinkin of it a while ago, but its just easier to use the throttle Razz

We have a winch with electronic speed control in our warehouse. The problem we had designing the speed control was we had to find an engine that had much more on board electronics than the standard 6.5 HP engine. The smallest engine we could find was 15HP

Thanks,

you could use machine holes into the spool like a tone ring in a jeep, and use a magnetic pickup and a car speedo and cruise control, but that would require 12v defeating any portability

Power and portability is not a problem.. Just have to use an engine with a built in alternator to create the power...

like tony said 12 gauge winches doing it right, not necessarily a speed pass but it has a set screw. Set the screw to the speed you like and just go full speed, even the old lady can drive her

don't forget that while using a speedo and measuring spool RPM, you've gotta take into account the increasing diameter of the spool...

also, depending on how you've got your fairlead rollers set up you may not be getting even spread of your rope over your spool, therefore making the middle of the spool develop a larger diameter faster...

and a larger diameter needs less spool RPM to produce the same speed...

ideally you would want a speed sensor on the fairlead roller, measuring the speed at which the rope is retracting...

or a sensor to constantly measure the diameter of the line on the spool (at the current point of line contact) and a program that calculates what spool RPM you need to maintain a desired speed... then a chip on the motor that can adjust the engine RPM to maintain the desired spool RPM....

doable.. but complex. Cool

of course you COULD just set up a little mechanical device with a hard linkage to the throttle that spins on the axle with the spool..

and it would need a series of reduction gears so that for a given number of revolutions it mechanically, and gradually, pulls the throttle closed.. therefore slowing spool RPM as you ride and closing all the way to idle at the end of the pull.... but this would work best for single location set ups... (i.e. competitions)

right engineering, wrong application.

you could wear the gps on yourself... and let it transmit your speed to the controller on the winch Bang Head

it really would be a neat thing to have on a winch.. but it may not be worth the cost of the R&D to design it. Bang Head
