Hey there,
totally new to the forum but a bunch of my kiteboard friends and I have been using a friends grinch to hit rails and booters and have decided to make our own winch.
All the parts have been ordered except for the line..
I've read a ton of posts and some people like the 7/64 amsteel while others swear by the bulletline. I think we are leaning towards 1/8 amsteel for a little more nick resistance.
What are people using and what are they happy with. 7/64 seems really thin. We will be using the winch mostly at the beach (fresh water beach).
Like to keep the costs down somehwat so i can buy some hopups for the honda |

Sounds good. One other question.. I was going to make my spool out of threaded stock and a split rim. Do I need two hubs one for each side or jsut one?
Thanks!! |

just use one hub and keep it bolted together. That is what I did. I have 800 ft of 7/64 and it all fits on there with plenty of room. The most common mistake first time builders make is making their spool too wide. |

thanks for the advice guys!! After staring at the computer screen for hours trying to find the correct rim for a spool, etc, etc. I decided to buy two wheel hubs with keys to lock onto my axle. I am going to fabricate the walls (12") of the spool out of 3/4 plexiglass and form the center spindle out of threaded rod covered with conduit.
SO the dimensions of the spool will be inner diameter 7.5", 12" outer, I was thinking 6" wide. Will that be wide enough?
Shooting for 1000' of 7/64 amsteel.
I'll post pics I PROMISE because we wouldn't be building our winch if it wasn't for the work and pics of other.
Share the stoke!!
Some pics of my first winch session (and some other guys) are here....

I hear you for sure but that water that we are winching in is about 6-8 inches deep all the way until you get to the ramp. Then its about a foot deep. Soooo busting out kick flips and shove its isn't really an option at that spot.
Any who, put together a little vid. nothing spectacular but what the hell its something. And before you say man, you guys suck..we spend 98% of our time kiteboarding and we shred that shizzle. This is just a no wind activity for us.
Cheers.
