i just got my board today (Hyperlite Scape 112) and i wanted some advice. but before i ask i guess ill tell yall about myself.
im 22, 140lbs, work as a graphic designer, and im a senior in college. i own a waverunner but have only really tubbed behind it. but my friend recently bought a wakeboard and an instructional dvd ("the book"). we went out on the wakeboard and we both got up easily and road fairly well. then we watched the dvd and i saw danny hampson on a wakeskate being a totaly badass. so ever since then i can only see wakeboarders as posers compared to wakeskaters. after only 3 weeks of wakeboarding my friend and his wife have already purchased a boat and we are going out tomorrow and it'll be our first time on the skate.
ANYWAYS....i was just wondering if yall think i got the right board for my small size and someone that has never skateboarded? and also if yall know of any ways to practice on the board at home. any other first timer advice is always welcome. _________________ <img> |

Blip, your wakeskate length will be more than enough. I would say general lengths are between 40 and 42 inches, with some starting to run a bit shorter. You have something that's at a 44, which is on the longer side, but it will do for now.
I wouldn't necessarily worry about not skateboarding. I think that background helps because as you progress and want to start learning tricks where that board is rotating underneath you, you'll be able to see the move, and know how to watch the board. But in general, I think any kind of board riding will help you on a wakeskate (and vice versa) because you're just getting more time in that sideways stance and working with that kind of balance.
I think skating is a good for practicing off the water. Other people have "carpet boarded" by tying a rope to something in the house and then they worked on shuvs and things like that. Some people also take their board on a trampoline and practice their little maneuvers as well.
Anyway, good luck with that. My advice is just to have some fun and ride within your ability level. _________________ *The opinions expressed are on my behalf and not those of wakeskating.com* |

Blip, WELCOME TO OUR WONDERFUL SITE!(dont get bummed out by some people bashing other people, sometimes that happens)
Now...to answer you questions
The Hyperlite scape is a very beginner board. This length of this board(longer than most) will help get you up and out of the water. The more surface area, the easier and quicker you get up. So congrats, your made a solid choice so far.
As far as your weight goes, the sizing of a skate doesnt seem to go hand in hand with your weight nearly as much as wakeboard. Wakeskating is very very much based on personal prefrence. So once your up and riding, find some other skaters in your area, and test out their board to see where your next purchase should be headed.
You board is a flat deck(no concave like a skateboard has). Typically people will tell you that this may hold you back from progressing, but people can kill it on a flat deck, so your good to go.
Also. If you have a trampoline. Attach a rope to a tree. Get a walmart skate deck(take off the trucks) and jump around on your tramp. Start learning some tricks. This will teach you how you catch your tricks in the air, how to throw your tricks, and more importantly give you alot of muscle memory so your body naturaly wants to do a trick when the thought enters your brain.
We're pumped your into wakeskating. Have FUN, thats all that matters.
:EDIT:
O yes, you are correct, all wakeboarders do look like posers compared to Danny Hampson. Steeze!!!!! _________________ 10101 |
