So I just ordered some parts to get my build underway and I'm wondering whats the best CC for a 3/4" drive shaft?

Northern Tool only carries a Hilliard, which is what I bought, and if it doesnt work $35 bucks wont kill me. Think it'll deep water a 190lb dude that can get up "lightly"? (6.5hp Briggs w 12/60 & 8" spool)

Where are you getting your clutches and what are your experiences? I hear the Comet w/needle bearings is the way to go, but it's 1" drive.

One other thing...will a metal shop be able to cut the axle to fit? That thing is pretty solid. (kart axle)

Thanks.

I have never used a CC. Some people say they work fine others dont think they do. But I hear a lot that CC's dont deep water start squat.

Alsoif you are worried that you dont have the correct tools to cut the axle, you probably dont have the correct tools to build a winch.

I used a really thin cutting disc witn my angle grinder.

Ya diffently you need alot of metal shop tools and good Fabricating skills to make a winch that will always work. How are you making the frame?

I'm having it built by a metal fabricator. It'll be a Cockney winch...I just wasnt sure about how tough the axle is...i really dont know anything about metal work.

As far as the clutch goes, I guess we'll see how it works and go from there. Those Tav's are damn pricey...but probably worth it.

Yea I had a TAV and a CC. And with the CC you get alot of slack in the rope and with a TAV you dont. Also a CC gives you no torque which makes the starts way harder for heavy guys. A TAV is the way too go!!

Most clutches can deep water start if the motor has the power but with the setup you describe it is highly unlike you will be deep water starting. The tav has a gear reduction of 2.7:1 on startup so you have 2.7 times the torque. Thats why deep water starts are so much easier with a Tav. I've had winches with clutches and they pull super smooth plus its real easy to walk out the rope. Just never been able to deep water start. You should be able to cut the axle with a hacksaw. Might take a while though.

I just re-ordered it along with a sprocket and sprocket mount. That'll slow me down another week. The frame is just about done. When I get some pics I'll post em.

Will these two things fit together?
