spool #1 = FAIL *update*

The result of a poorly designed spool and heavy deep water starts...

any ideas? I think im going to take out all of the conduit and just use the rim. Im also having some sidewalls made out of metal, no more cutting discs.

Will post pics when completed.

Ya.I used cutting disc with just long bolts an it broke after a few pulls. I am using wood rite now till i get my aluminum spool made and it has at least 80 pulls on it an hasnt buged!

I didnt have anything going through the conduit. My first mistake was making a 10 inch wide spool. I think im going to just use the rim and make it 4 inches wide.

i have the two hubs bolted together with cutting wheel disks on the sides and it has worked fine for a year.

once that conduit was welded it became weak because of the heat

you could use the conduit over some 5/8 long bolts to stop the rope getting cut up on the threads

What I did was used 3/8 inch threaded rod and found steel tubing that fit over it. Then i cut the threaded rod to 10 in. and the steel tubing 8 in. Giving you an 8 in. wide spool. Then i bolted the threaded rod with the steel tubing over it to a 12 in. cutting discs.

hus #1, the heat shouldn't have affected the spot that bent. if it bent closer to the weld I'd agree with you but I don't think the conduit was strong enough to begine with. What's the wall thickness on it??

Why are people using threaded rod instead of hexbolts with about an inch or two of threads on the end. Threading raises the cost of a bolt so much and without it you don't have to worry about wear on the rope.

I ment 5/8 in. and the rope wont wear if you buy steel tubing to go around the threaded rod. I think either will work just fine though.

Rugrat, true, tubing will prevent wear, but then you have to buy that tubing and pay extra for full threads.

While I'm not trying to build the cheapest winch possible I'd like to save a few bucks here and there as long as I'm not compromising too much on quality.

The cutting disc ripped, so the bolts were just hanging.

The conduit was too week to begin with, Im just going to get rid of it all together.

Yea.Just get long bolts and cut out four 1inch tubing pieces.Than get nice side walls like aluminium or wood if you want. Than drill your holes and put the bolts through the side walls with the tubing over the bolts and in between. So then you have a very solid spool
