To Much Weight?

I got my knock 6.5 engine wit TAV2
500 ft of strait line winch rope
spool specs- 12 inch spoll wall/ 6 id / 5 in wide

it pulls me fine and i weigh like 180
but when my buddy goes to ride it will pop him up but then it wont keep him up to speed hell start to sink (he weighs 240) you would think the hard part would be gettin him up but i deep water started em and tryed a shore start everytime hed go like 20ft then just sink.

The inner diameter of the spool needes to be 8inches and that should do the trick.

yeah, change the inner diameter to 8 inches

So the 8 inch inside diameter will get up 240 lbs?

It should, If you dont have the rite inner diameter it wont pull good at all. The bigger diameter the more torque you will get.

sandiego4real, I think you were right. I'm pretty sure a larger Inner Diameter spool will give you a little more torque but less top end speed.

Maybe i'm wrong.

LBC Sk8, try starting him off a piece of wood or something he can slide on to start so he hits the water at riding speed. If he still doesn't ride away like that I'd try the bigger diameter spool or a larger sprocket, but you'll be sacrificing top speed.

JB_CANSKATE, yah we tried a lot of stuff shore start on a wake skate and a covenant (flex board) i got him out deep water on the flex board but just couldnt get em on plane

sandiego4real, im just gonna make another spool and see how it works if not then hell be operator til we blow up the engine

when it pulls me the speed is fine it might be a little fast but im not one to care about my speed as long as im on plane ill try my trick (prolly why some of my tricks are so inconsistent)

i had the same thing with an 8inch spool. 200+ pound riders need 8hp motors. i don't think even a 7hp. would be enough.

bigger spool = more top end speed and less touque

bigger sprocket = more torque and less top end speed

The physics aren't exactly what you would expect. I agree that an 8" spool will help. I would also recommend try to start by sliding off of something. With my old winch (6HP/CC) it would pull fine up to about 175lbs, but heavier riders needed a boost at the start. For some reason, having a larger spool makes the engine work less. This is because you can gear the engine to spin the spool slower. However, a larger spool will also give you more top end. It is all about the circumference bc this is the amount of rope that will reel in with every revolution of the spool. For these reasons, you can't go wrong with a larger diameter on your spool. Truthfully, I can't imagine it ever creating a problem going larger that 8 inches if you gear it accordingly. The reason most people stop around 8 is to maintain a managable sized winch. When we built our first winch, we had nothing to go by and we made the spool diameter 4.5 inches. It would wind and ton of rope really quick and then the engine would strain and it would recoil. It never worked right at all. You can try calculators and do that math all day long but it's just so different once the water becomes a factor.

your buddy should have to carry the winch by him self. He'll get a workout and loose the weight needed for a better pull. Laughing
