I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to do my spool. The cutting disc idea seems to be easy and fairly inexpensive, I'm just concerned that it won't be strong enough. Is there a minimum thickness required or would any 12-15inch disc work? And the bolts go directly through the disc with nothing else supporting them? Can you weld the discs to the axle or would a sprocket hub work better ? Would I need one or two sprocket hubs if I went that route? Thanks for your time

one more thing. a 60 tooth sprocket is the right way to go with a t-a-v? I have the 3/4 with 35# chain. I want to order some parts off ebay.

I like this method. I cut my sidewalls out free hand and they are far from perfectly round but did the trick all last season.

I also used a 60 tooth sprocket with a 6.5 hp honda knock off engines. When the engines where running well it was plenty stong but I lost compression on 2 engines in like 5 months.

Buy a quality engine at the start and save yourself a huge pain in the ass.

60 tooth with the tav and 3/4 and #35 chain will be perfect. I've got that setup with a 6.5 briggs and it works great. I used some PVC 1/4" material and cut out sidewalls and used a 6.25" ATV rim for the spool. It works really well and pulls really smoothly.

Kay-Kay, you would need a sprocket adapter to go on both side walls. Go buy a good drill bit for this, cutting discs aren't as weak as they look. I double my side, once everything is all bolted in place it is super strong. You just have to make sure you got accuracy on your side.

price.dan, do you need to double up on the sides? those bolts look massive is that really necesary?

How much does the atv rim cost? seems more expensive and heavier.

I think I paid..... $20 - $25 tops for the rim.... it's not that heavy and it's about your best option for a really round and smooth pull without doing a lot of welding and fabricating.

Parts I used for my spool.

One of these. (Bolts to the rim and is what attaches the spool to the axle.)
http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_35760_35760

Four 1/2" (I think...) Bolts Thread Only no heads. (These go through the hub and rim and then you tighten a nut on either side against each other to hold the two together. Do this for all four bolts.)

And whatever you choose for sidewalls. Drill out at 1 inch hole, dead center, and four holes to match up with the bolt pattern on the hub and rim. Then I just used more bolts and washers to attach the sidewalls and a little thread locker and you're set.

I'm sure I sound Crazy Eyes and you're probably confused but that's pretty much how I did it, minus visuals. I'll explain better if you want.
