CR is a bad place to learn how to surf. A lot of people die trying to surf over there. I am not trying to scare you, but just pay attention and know your limits. If you do surf go to Jaco, it would be a safer place because the waves break on a sandbar and not a reef or rock. O and dont stay at any hotels in san jose unless you like 12 year old prostitution Confused

crispy,

JAM, is dead on..... many people have gone down there thinking that surfing will be an easy thing or a easy thing. if you wanna surf, learn on something under 2 feet. and also, 6 feet plus over there are backs not faces.. which means those are 12 foot faces!!!!!!

also watch out for croc's and jelly fish....

Edited: ok i completely edited this post, the break off my beach is a reef break, its supposed to be rather large, it says for experienced surfers on site. now it says in a 1 minute walk there is a sand bar break that is all sand and smaller waves, i also believe i might suck up and pay $40 for a surf lesson, that can't be too bad can it, atleast i woulnt die the first hour im surfing Smile

crispy, i mean of course you could find a little spot... but, no matter where you go, YOU WILL BE STUNG....and the crocs are serious shizzle.... they have had more than 10 surfers/ scuba divers (locals and tourists) go missing without a trace... if there is any underwater caves, STAY AWAY. they lurk around there.... but i mean it is deffinatly worth the go.... also, don't let anyone know you have any money and or you are from america and you should be good

ya you could, you just have to look. You might luck out and find that there isnt any swell and it could be flat. On the other hand it could be pumping 8ft faces. Surf Jaco if you want the safer break. Just remeber, over there its like cali on the pacific. The sets can vary in size and you can be surfing consistent 4ft swell and then all of a sudden the last wave in the set can be 7 ft and you might not be ready for it and those waves can hold you down like no other. Really though man I would go, even if I didnt get a chance to surf I would be happy. Where else can you go and see live volcanos, be in the middle of jungle, and walk on some of the most pristine beaches all in the same place. Not to mention the wild life. You can see freakin monkeys, in the wild. Tucans too man. Thats just sweet haha. Stay away from river mouths that empty into the ocean, thats where you will find crocs. They arent everywhere. Plus its there dry season so that will keep the croc level on the low. Don't leave anything valuable in your car either. Do it man and you will be happy you did. Take pics man and make me jealous. O and I think jellys are worse during Jan-march, so you should be safe.

haha, the house is on a beach with 5 others if i haven't bragged about that, its nowhere near a river i believe so thats even better. i also think it is about 3km from a town so i might wake up with monkeys and tucans around me in the morning walking out on the deck. i would be more then happy to take pics of my out of shape figure in the beautiful surroundings of costa rica... wait wouldnt that balance it out? so it'd just be an ok picture Smash and i read its extremely crouded at certain times Sad i dont like crouded areas, makes me nervous in foreign places... and i dont think i will be driving anywhere, and other then money i have nothing valuable being taken with me.. cell phones cost like 80cents a minute Crazy Eyes

I learned to surf in Costa -- Bad move! Jam is right. It is a hard place to learn.

STICK TO THE BEACH BREAKS!!

Tamarindo is a good beach break. Playa Nagra is the most famous point break in Costa. DO NOT LEARN THERE>>>you will die.

Close to Playa Negra is Playa Envianis (spelling). It is a long beach break with a point break a ways out called "Little Hawaii". Stick to the beach and you will be fine.

Make sure that you surf with a friend. My brother and I surfed together and we survived, sting rays, rip currents, etc.....

Costa in December is also Awesome because it's "Toro" season. You will soon learn the joys of Toro and Cervesa Imperial.

Good luck!!

Yes....Tamarindo is very crouded and full of dirty-ass Hippies. I only went there to get a board and some weed. There are also plenty of Prostitutes if you are into that....

If you have the money to rent a car, you can drive the coast and find plenty of nice beach breaks with NO ONE on them.

My bro and I had a river mouth that we surfed in. It was dangerous, but fun. I have a million awesome stories from Costa. It is such a dope place. Move around and try to surf as many spots as you can.

Yes...the stars at night are Amazing.

SERIOUSLY>>>>do not surf alone in Costa unless you know what you are doing. Surf with a friend - that person may well save your life.

1) If you are there for more than 3 weeks, then I would go to Tamarindo and buy a longboard and then sell it after you leave. If you are there for less, then just rent one... HOWEVER, if you are an idiot like me and try to surf a longboard at low-tide in a foot of water and break it, you might as well have bought one. Yes....Tamarindo will have cheap used boards for rent - possibly to buy as well.

2) Renting a car is as much as flying there. They are very expensive. THE ROADS ARE INSANE! There were times when we could only drive at low tide because of the rivers we had to cross. Don't call them roads....call them jungle pathes.

Also...if there is a young hot chick hitch-hiking on the side of the road - only pick her up if you are willing to pay for a blow-job. That is how they make their money....."highway hummers."

3) If you don't have anyone to surf with, then stick to Tamarindo with the rest of the Tourists. Just paddle out into the line-up and try to fit in. Avoid going to remote surf spots alone and stick to the crowds.

Make your parents rent a car and drive that car up and down the coast, you will see some crazy sh$t.

i dont want to go with tourists, i see that Buena Vista is a very nice surf spot with small waves, along with Samara...

and i will only be there from 13-20... so not 3 weeks lol.

and im not willing to hike 20minutes in a car every day to surf with a bunch of tourists that im gonna "try" to fit in, so while im gone just say a nice prayer for me every night Smile
