got a question about the big wakeskate manufacturers that make wooden boards. how do they really do it? like i was reading the kampus catalogue thing from like 05 i think and it was saying stuff about cold press and hot press. but what does that really mean? and im just not really sure how they make so many wooden boards... anything would be appreciated Very Happy

to make a wooden skate,, you lay a bunch of wood veneers in a press with the one with the graphic on the bottom. lay them one on top of the other with a glue inbetween each veneer. the press is curved so that when you take the glued veneers out, they are curved.

cold pressing means ou just press them at whatever temperature, heat pressing is applying heat to the press in order to make the glues stick better i beleive.

once thats done you cut out the shape and router the edges. on flat decks at least. on concave decks, you put a computerized drawing off the shape into what is called a CNC machine, which cuts out all the contours on tp making the concave. then you paint it and seal it and all that jazz.

kampas was my favority wakeskate company. I truely thought that they would be the leaders in the WS industry. Just goes to show you that really good product and amazing designs is not everything.
Too bad:(

Cold press is just that Cool. No heat is applied to the mold so no heat is curing the glue. Heat press is used for quick press time. Speeding up the processes of getting boards done is a fast and cheap manner. Once the veneers are cooled. you put the 16 ply or more onto a CNC milling machine. Using various bite. The goal is to cut a board in about 15mins. I personaly was cutting my boards in about 45mins because I did not have a fancy machine. The Rover CNC is the best for this I think. Thats the difference between cold and hot. TIME.

Tell ya what. I will see if vince is cool about shooting a video section on DURF how a wakeskate is made from the staring to the finishing. It takes time to make a wakeskate, but the end result is so worth the hard work.

Any more questions, I would love to anwser them to my best ability.

Sizes vary depending on the application, they are very expensive like starting at $250,000 for the kind used in my industry.

you can get CNC machines from 35,000 to 250,000. The machine I have is around 45,000 and does the job, but you can get the ROVER CNC machine for around 100,000 and WOW.

As for the temp... depends on the glues. Some glues require heat some do not.

The epoxy we use at work WILL NOT fully kick without heat. We press our boards at approx 170*.

But for some glues that do not require heat, like Pauly was saying it's a matter of time.
