from what i was told it had to do with the bi-level, what happened was the boards were breaking way to easily and Thomas didnt have the money to warranty the boards, so shops in turn decided not to carry their stuff anymore because they were losing money. If I'm correct Aaron Reed used to ride for LF so did Thomas, and LF offered Aaron a spot back on the team I don't know if they offered Thomas one or not, of course Danny Hampson followed i mean the kids 19 and hes awesome. Other then that I read that Thomas works down in Miami at some nice as night club and makes pretty damn good money, rides everyday and im sure he still has a ton of boards left over from all the products he had made.

I don't really have a lot of time right now, but just from my perspective, I can't imagine that EVERY shop would reject cassette's line, as opposed to the flat decks and other wakeskates that some other companies put out. There is not a lot of money made on those, especially if they have to be warrantied. But it seems familiar that a few did have a problem with the risk at the time. Anyway, I think that makes it even radder that ed took on a bunch of cassettes into the boardstop last summer.

Ultimately though, after Fresh water traction, cassette was the original wakeskate company. They did begin to utilize liquid's connections in 00 (before that, thomas had a little online store thing going with wakeskate.com), but I don't know that you could say thomas and aaron officially rode for liquid, because cassette was always thomas'. 04 was a rough year, board wise and they ended up releasing a limited run of boards because of production issues. 05 was also complex when some of the bi-levels began to fall apart and they tried to warranty as many boards as possible (which was hit or miss, I might add. Dave barousse had a first batch bi-level and rode it through that entire summer. now it's in my grubby paws Twisted Evil )

In the end, I don't really want to say too much much and ultimately speculate or add in my theories about what led to the downfall of cassette, but I dont' think it's too crazy to say that money ended up being an issue. Aaron rode his cassettes until he couldn't get any more boards. After that, if you want to continue to live your lifestyle and push wakeskating, you need to pursue other options.

in the grand scheme of things, "what's so good about cassette?" Thomas decided to follow his heart and invest his time and creativity in wakeskating, pretty much at the height of his wakeboarding career. To drop it all and go to something that is so low key...I think that's pretty amazing. Cassette produced the first all wakeskating video (linear perspective) and they had a number of progressive firsts when it came to board design. Furthermore, they just KNEW how to ride. you could look at any member of cassette and they didnt' have any kooky style, they just progressed wakeskating the way it needed to progressed. For me personally, some of the most memorable imagery came from that company and that group of riders. And if you were on this message board when sfumato came out, you know about the buzz and how sick it was when your video finally came in the mail, and you really got to see danny hampson's potential, and the fun editing in jim's part, and the first winching footage courtesy of thomas and rewind and how much aaron reed ripped (and how much you sucked Very Happy ). Jokingly, I do recall reading from at least one person that the video made them want to quit wakeskating. Very Happy personally, those guys always put out the raddest vibe when it came to the team aspect, because you could totally tell that they weren't just teammates, they were friends too.

Aesthetically, thomas also really incoporated art into wakeskating. I highly recommend checking out a copy of hotdoggin and looking for the cassette commercial. It's some of the most inspiring editing, coupled with the perfect music. you'll also see the first noseslides from thomas...on a flat deck. But even aside from editing, the board graphics were completely different from what anyone had seen and they stood alone. Someone said that you could see the graphic and just know it was a cassette.

on a personal note, I also always had a lot of respect for cassette (and the people who've contributed along the way) and thomas in particular because he was just this young guy that was making shizzle happen. I still stand firm on the thought that nobody can think quite like thomas, especially when it comes to some of cassette's contributions to wakeskating. So to have a 26 year old running his own company and pushing wakeskating and supporting some of its riders...I think that's an amazing accomplishment, regardless of where cassette is right now.

labellethrasher, how long do you think it took me to type that? My fingers dance across these keys like your feet dance on the water. Very Happy

But those things always end up longer than I expect. You've got to put some thought into the important things...

Trey, I wouldn't count anything out. I feel optimistic.
