A Fire Inside actually came from the Roman (and Greek?) belief that human beings had a fire burning inside them, causing body heat and animation of the body. And they also believed that light beams shot from our eyes (which were lanterns) and bounced back what we saw. And when you died, your fire went out.

Booyah! I've also heard from some people who were into the scene in the California punk scene in early 90's that AFI stood for "another fvcking injection" but that could have been another band...
