i dont like the trucks on the graphic. the girl i could live with but the trucks are something i would expect to see on a wakeskate if they sold it at target. just my opinion. graphics dont determine how a board rides either

Palms, the only difference is graphics pretty much. LF's minx binding is the only thing that was made for women. next year LF will have two new boards specifically for women and Ronix will have one board and maybe a pair of bindings, too.

but there are no women's-specific wakeskates that i know of...

I have to agree with my fellow Lake County resident, JamesBoardr. The trucks are what throws it off

Like old school skateboard graphics.

I think it's just a LF Anthem with different graphics.

If you like it go for it. Plus its pretty cheap.

Okay, so I feel super-old right now but thank you che blanc for posting that link.

The graphics on the 2005 LF Melissa 41 appear to have been inspired by the Mark Gonzales (a.k.a. "The Gonz") pro model skateboard by Vision that came out around 1986.

Mark Gonzales was one of the pioneers of street skating (born in 1969). He was the 1st guy to kickflip in street skating in 1985 (well, known of guy) - One year after he made the cover of Thrasher which turned him pro and in turn got him a signature model. Maybe you've heard of the "Gonz Gap" or maybe not...it was a huge gap at Embarcadero in San Fran (before Embarcadero was redesigned later on). If you've heard of Natas Kaupas...those two were the 1st to hit handrails (known of). He was also a good artist.

Here are pics of the ORIGINAL deck...not to be confused with the many re-released repro decks.

Oh yeah...and here's a lil' something from www.skateboarding.com:

Mark Gonzales. His skating, style, art, personality, and history have changed the face of skateboarding and embody what the Legend Award is all about. TWS will be honoring him and Natas Kaupas will be presenting him with the 2006 TransWorld SKATEboarding Legend Award.

Sorry if I bored any of you with the roots. Just read all of that and thought it would be good to post some history. Gay? Perhaps to some. To me, no...a good reminder of our past and a great new memory to add to old ones.

BTW…I own this board and bought it on close out this year when I wanted to try wakeskating on my own after using this year’s Melissa at a Maven session (I was the only one there who wanted to try wakeskating at our women’s clinic since I don’t know anyone around my area who wakeskates). It’s the board that got me hooked on wakeskating and yes, I did recently replace it with my NT 39.75 because the Melissa started falling apart (cracking) the 1st day I rode it but I’m happy it’s the one that got me stoked on wakeskating.

ozwest, Thanks for the breakdown Very Happy

I think everyone on here appreciates a little history, especially if it has to do with the roots of our sport. I was under the impression that Rodney Mullen was the first to kickflip, am I misled?

And is that your board collection? Shocked

Good point there che blanc. I forgot about Rodney Mullan (funny enough since he was one of my favorite skaters). Back in the day his version of the kickflip was known as a Magic Flip, (dang...I am old) which I think was created by mistake when he didn't pull off a flatland ollie. Not 100% on that one though...too many concussions for this gal.

I still would like to think that some unknown/underappreciated person first invented it but nobody was there to see it and then it was further developed by others. Or perhaps Animal Chin was the originator. Only the truth will be known for sure.

Nope, not my board collection. I had quite a few boards in my quiver and then when my parents split and I moved out...they mysteriously disappeared. Still pissed about that one. Guess I should have let them know how much those meant to me...in retrospect, my fault I didn't express that (no use blaming the parents). All I was left with was an old Powell-Peralta Tony Hawk board with Boneite from the Bones Brigade era, a 1986 Nash with Tuf-Top (the 1st skateboard my parents bought me since they didn’t know much about boards…man that board sucked…totally flat but you’ve got to give props to Mom & Dad for trying to support their daughter), some old Alva whatever board, and a few Beer City skate decks. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the Variflex whatever that I snaked from my older brother when I couldn’t stand my Nash…not much of an upgrade but better at that time since I couldn’t afford the good decks yet. Really wish I still had my Santa Cruz Jeff Grosso Toybox (1987)…somebody on Ebay has one for $400 which cracks me up.

Here’s a pic of the one that got away that is being sold on Ebay (Santa Cruz Jeff Grosso Toybox from 1987) and a pic of another being sold on Ebay...that looks like the one I started with thanks to Mom & Dad (1986 Nash).

ozwest = my new hero. Word to Old school....bringing back memories.

Natas Kaupas rules.

I saw an old-school Kevin Staab that brought back some memories:

I think that Sattelyte should do a limited release old-school directional shape wakeskate for old-skoolers. That would be tight.

Remember this?

jonnyUTAH: Pulling out the old Sims lineup eh? Cool links to the re-issued decks. Thanks. Kevin must be in his late 30's by now...maybe even 40? I think he was at least 10 years older than me since I was 10 when my parents gave me my 1st skateboard.

He was one helluva pool skater. I think he was in the movie Thrashin' that came out in 1986.

Thanks for the memories jonnyUTAH...and BTW..."Utah! Get me two!"
