Area wakeboarders add wakeskating

Four teenagers in the Peterborough area are having a lot of fun on the water and just want to promote what they enjoy.

Brothers Vince Whiteman, 17, and Corey Whiteman, 19, of Bridgenorth, and buddies John Vanden Broek, 15, of Ennismore and Luke Hayes, 16, of Peterborough have formed a wakeboard, wakeskate bond if you will.

Both activities are very similar with wakeskate like a skateboard except it’s on water, in the shape of skateboard but smaller and without bindings. Wakeboard is also on water but a little bigger with bindings.

No matter how you look at it, these four live a little on the edge so to speak and have a fondness for Xtreme sports. Oh yes, they also skateboard and snowboard. Vince Whiteman (Grade 11), Hayes (Grade 11) and Vanden Broek (Grade 10) attend St. Peter’s Secondary School while Corey Whiteman works for Devour Technologies in Omemee.

Entering their fourth season together as wakeboarding enthusiasts, they have formed their only little club or crew as Vince Whiteman likes to call it, E-Vill Wake.
Through the Internet and other connections or competitions, there are two others on board, Andy Ross from Texas and Mark Enns of Oakville, who ski (and skate) in Florida.

“The reason for the name is top secret,” muses Vince Whiteman, the only one of the four to wakeskate in earnest the last four years, although they all take part in it. “Corey and I started it and it’s just meant for fun and to promote the sport. We’re friends, riders and we just love it. There’s nothing we would rather do. It’s great.”

Vince Whiteman said he and his brother went wakeskating on Chemong Lake by Gifford Causeway at Rotary Park in Ennismore in mid-April because the weather was unusually warm. Normally, he recounted, they wouldn’t start riding until the middle of May but the conditions were right and the urge to ride was strong.

“So we brought out our Jet Ski and went riding,” he said. “It was great.”

Sadly, for them, the conditions haven’t been consistently good since then, and they have been out little. It hasn’t deterred them though and they soon hope to be on the water regularly. They were out on Pigeon Lake Saturday.

“I love to wakeskate,” said Vince. “For me, it’s more of a challenge just to stay on it. We like it all. You go fast and it keeps you in shape. Overall we like it on the water. You try many different tricks and it’s easier to fall in the water than on cement on a skateboard.”

Not only do the foursome enjoy the sport, they are keen on promoting it. One of the venues is through an independent video they are working on throughout the summer, hopefully ready by next spring. Vince says the main purpose isn’t to make money.

“We do it for fun and want to sell the sport,” Shocked I NEVER SAID THAT he said. “It’s more of an education, a documentary. We’re all involved. We all drive, spot, video and wakeskate. We direct our own parts and I edit. We want to put it on a DVD.”

The name of the video project is 20:1, meaning for every 20 minutes of raw footage, a minute is used for production.

“There is a variation of stuff we can do,” said Vince. “It’s individual, you learn stuff at your own pace, have fun and keep active. It’s what it’s all about. We want people to know that.”

While it has been for fun, they have attended competitions in their own area and Haliburton. Vince Whiteman is currently the only one who is sponsored, including by Level13 wakeskates, a company in Pickering and Kawartha Lakes Wakeboard Company in Bridgenorth. The others are looking, too.

“You go to their shops and they help you get into contests,” said Vince. “They help with boards, equipment, things like that.”

there were some photos in the actual newspaper.
