Steel tubing came from scrap yard and was bent by heating it up. Spool is made from 2 old table saw blades with a 1” bore and the middle is 5 ½” od tubing from scrap yard. Shaft is 1” steel bar. All free

This link will help calculate spool size gearing and speed and will save a ton of headaches. http://www.csgnetwork.com/speedcalc.html

Being a shop teacher: Priceless

If you have access to a welder, cutting torch, grinder and metal cutting bandsaw and the skills to use them it’s a piece of cake. Just get some buds to go in on the parts and start winching.

p.s. The coolest part of this whole thing is that a former student that I had as a freshman my first year teaching is the one helping build the winch. Since I taught him to wakeboard on sept. 11 2001 we have been to OWC twice and ride about 5 days a week together.

Melvinator, pretty cool! one thing is chain tensionors, the centrifical clutch is real tuff to keep the chain on the sprockets with out a tensioner or chain guides. also that sproket looks rediculously small. i dont know if its on the other side but you def need a brake on the spool.

Radar lake is called obriens lake.

I ordered a bigger sprocket on Monday, I calculated everything out to run at about 20 mph. It bogged the motor down real bad the way it is.

This was just the trial run, I am going to add a brake to the finished product. What do you recomend for a chain tensioner?

Melvinator, look into to motocross stuff, they have chain rollers and chain quides, thats wat i was thinking or even if u have a timing chain tensionor from a car motor that could work too.
also need a way to tighten the chain.

and i got all my metal today, just gotta mark, cut, drill weld Cool

one thing i didnt consider, the 3/4" round bar i got for the shaft is rusty on the surface, i think i am gonna have to find a better source for that because i dont think i can sand out all the pitting and what not. might sell the 3/4" pillow blocks and get some 1" ones and a 1" go kart axle, 3/4" looks TINY

wake-till-i-die, I made my own spook out of 5 1/2" pipe and 2 table saw blades.

I can't access google earth anymore, Just type in "orlando watersports complex" or "obriens lake redmond washington" and that should get you there.

ok, me an my buddy got the frame 95% done today. the basic shape is all there, we cut everything and tacked it together, drilled the pilot holes for the bearings, and ground down a few of the welds. still a lot of tacks to be added just to fill in the lines between pieces for cosmetic/water not getting inside and rusting purposes, but its solid right now. not the prettiest welds but not bad given that my buddy is just learning. sorry no pics tonight i took a few but the lighting is way off for some reason. hopefully we will get time to get in the lab and finish it up this week, still need to make the motor plate, cut out discs for the sidewalls of the spool an weld them to it, get the collars for attaching the spool an sprocket to the axle, drill the sprocket hole bigger, drill a hole for the eye bolt (temporary until the fairlead shows up), and basically bolt it together. i am planning to leave it raw until i go home in a few weeks so i can fill in some welds/grind and clean them all up in my dads shop before i paint it. ill snap some pics in the mornings, i am STOKED though it really came along today, finally.

BTW, i bought 30" of 2x2 for the reciever bit, it runs up the middle of the frame then sticks out the back. i was going to cut it off to be as short as could be, but i think im going to leave it as long as it is, i have JUST enough room for the engine to clear my tailgate on my truck if i drill a hole for the hitch pin at the end of the 2x2. so i can be a lazy butt and sit on my tailgate while i run it, score
