i know there is a million winch topics already posted and ive searched through most of them the best i could but i just couldnt find any definate way to figure out your gear ratios... we just bought most of our parts to construct this winch but we think the gear ratios are going to be really different because of the size of our spool... we have 1000 ft of 1/8 in rope so the spool is much smaller than that of the grinch or black box... so my question is this... does anyone know of a formula or definate instructions of how to figure out the gear ratios? any help would be greatly appreciated and again im sorry if this post has been answered before.... i just couldnt find it.

It's something you'll have to play with. It's cool that you're keeping the winch where (I believe) it belongs . . . as a garage project.

the only problem right now is we haven't even gotten to the garage stage and we don't feel like buying a dozen sprockets before finding the right one. as the one who has to do the math, i'd like to get it right on paper before moving to the testing stage. Bang Head

find the size of the spool and gear ratio of the grinch or black box and then make a ratio with that of your spool and figure out the gear ratio that way should be fairly simple.

my problem is: where do i measure the size of my spool? is it the inner tube without the rope? or is it the last layer of rope? or is it somewhere in between?

I'd say somwhere in between. An inch or two shouldn't matter on the speed all that much id' imagine.

lol... we hopefully figured it out but thanks for the help... one more question to anyone with a winch... when you put the thing in full throttle how much does the speed vary? for example how much faster does it go when the spool is full?
