I have moulded what I think is the perfect concave (my own design out) of some sort of pink foam my neighbor gave me, its the hard stuff that you can get in the construction section at any home depot. I am planning to put something over the foam to harden it, my dad and I have been thinking about fiberglass resin, but he thinks it might cause some sort of chemical reaction with the foam, (possibly burning it) I fear he might be right, and don't want to take the risk. I was wondering if anybody knew anything about this and if it is safe for the foam.
ps. the board is so small because it is supposed to be a prototype deck, just to get designs down, and I want to let my little neighbor try it this summer, he is nine, and I think hes done kneeboarding before.

You'd definitly wanna find something to harden, or atleast waterproof that foam because otherwise it'll just get waterlogged and all mushy while you're riding. I think you should be ok with fibreglass resin, I doubt it would react with the foam...even if it does you can just reshape the foam again and try something else...it's just a prototype as you said, so you should experiment. I'd make replicas of the foam, or atleast some detailed specs of it incase something does happen.
But yeah, you'll wanna get something that either saturates the foam and causes it to harden up (some sort of waterproof glue/epoxy maybe?) or completely cover it so it doesn't absorb water and get all mushy on you. You don't want your kicktails/concave collapsing on you in the middle of your ride.
Another idea would be to take those sections of foam and replicate them with wood, that would make the whole operation simpler while adding weight to your skate at the same time...unless you already have the magic weight down.
Either way, make sure you give your skate atleast 3 coats of marine varnish after you've done everything so the wood doesn't get waterlogged.

| yea my friend used to make skimboard out that pink shizzle and i am almost posotive he used the fiberglass like cloth sheets.... i am not sure how it works or how you fiberglass shizzle but i think he mixed resine and pasted over the sheets and it hardens. But i think it might work. But i dont know, i really have no idea, but thats a bad ass desighn and shizzle. Let us know how it turns out...

I would just cover it in a bunch of light coats of marine epoxy although it does heat when its curing but not that much. Then marine epoxy that i used when i made my board was strong and the first coat soaks into the wood and makes it extremely waterproof.

P.S. post some pics when you finish.

marine epoxy wouldnt do anything to hold the foam in place or keep it from mushing down. I made skimboards out of that stuff and know what it is like. That stuff is sweet and really easy to shape but I never got around to fiber glassing. Go with glass and tell us how it turns out.

ive used that foam on a homemade skate before. its like a fiberglass dry wall insulation. use fiberglass cloth and either a polyurethane resin or epoxy resin with it.

| ZoSo, its like a 32" board, the weight seems good for its size, and the fiberglass resin might weigh it down a bit too.

| If your concerned try using the resin on a piece of scrap material. That way you dont ruin the board.

I never use the actual "quote" button, I always manually type out [quote]/[./quote] when I wanna quote someting...its really just a force of habit...but it seems to be working.

ZoSo, cool
EVERYONE!! the fiberglass resin burns the shlt out of that foam , so we need to figure something else out.

| What resin did you use? polyurethane or epoxy? if it dosent work you should change the foam. Ill advise you to use a foam with closed cells.
